I must admit that I am not a fan of the new extensions

A prime example for me is .xyz as I simply can't stand it - and I remain convinced .xyz has not only been hyped to hell but I am highly dubious re all the supposed high end sales for it

However .VIP has caught my eye and even though it looks like the marketing guys are now pumping this one it seems to be gaining a lot of genuine traction too.

So far I just have one .VIP and that is Synergy.vip - so I am currently hardly that invested :)

Im still researching this new extension but I'm more and more inclined to invest here. What are your thoughts folks. Hype aside I really think there is potential here and one thing is for sure I'd much rather have keyword.vip than keyword.xyz

Hype doesn't last. It's worth what is left when the hype is gone. .vip has been hyped and promoted a lot. Where will it be in 2 years, that is the question.

Most of the success came from China but we have already seen how unpredictable and prone to fads China is.

Personally I view it as a Chinese fad domain, no different than the 6N, 5L, Chips etc. that we had seen last year.

It's not limited to China but most of the growth and hype came from there and I have enough of the domains registered (e.g 77731qw.vip ) to understand where a large part of the regs is coming from and where it is going.

Fair point for sure but have a feeling VIP will prove to have way more staying power than xyz / top et al.......Only time will tell I guess

This link sure makes for interesting viewing BUT of course a discerning domain investor will need to differentiate hype from genuine substance

Is this an unpaid report/video without financial interest involved.?Yes/No. Personally I doubt it as I believe some of the people had done other promotion work for MMX.

Basically to me it seems like watching a sleek ad and opening your wallet afterwards.

If the available domains are such a great investment why does the registry not premium price them and sell the names themselves? Or do they enjoy giving free money to domainers?

dot-VIP is great, but it's very tailored to express "importance" or "higher class" or "special privilege" etc. I enjoy it too. Comparing it to xyz though doesn't really work. Xyz is completely generic. So much so, in fact, it's generically nonsensical.

Correct. China is prone to fads (remember the craze for Tibetan mastiffs ? Poor dogs :-/).

Another thing to keep in mind is that China is heavily regulated. Everybody knows about the great firewall and the insane levels of online censorship. Chinese websites are supposed to be hosted in China and use 'approved extensions'.
If I'm not wrong .vip is in the list of 'approved TLDs' along .top .ren. So these TLDs are artificially overrepresented in China due to the regulations. They aren't great otherwise.

That being said, Chinese might be buying names from the registry or for regfee but I am not aware of an aftermarket for these extensions - domainers are not making any profit from these extensions.

I wouldn't feel comfortable 'investing' in this area.

IMO VIP = Very Improbable Profits

It's a cool little novelty/vanity extension, nothing I'd go looking to invest in since I'd bet the few obvious/desirable ones are reserved by the registry

Not going to dive in blind here at all - just weighing up the situation.
Guess at most I may end up with 10-20 and thats very much a may

As I said earlier I really dislike the vast majority of the new gltds - the only people in the main that have benefited are Icann and domain registrars but surely a handful will be adopted by the public longer term?

Maybe VIP will be one of those maybe not - its always a waiting game

As domain investors we are all essentially gamblers - best we can do is try and stack the odds in our own favour by researching as much as we can

Usually what looks like GOLD from distance usually is SHIT if looking closer.

I think it (.gdn) stands for Global Domain Name, don' know if it is marketed that way.
