Hey

as i go along i am trying to understand the relation between traffic levels and bandwidth (transfer)

is there a formula of any kind ?

like x amount of traffic requires (uses up) y amount of bandwidth?

any good info links out there?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It is hard to determine actual number of pages to a gig of transfer.

However based on an average 50k web page
The page should be able to be accessed 20,000 times
to use 1 GB of transfer (1000000 / 50 )

Things like streaming audio and video , graphics , email affect your data transfer.

if 1gb transfer bandwidth can support 20,000 visits (approx)

what is a sufficient level of traffic for a site to get in order to be viable- i.e - pay for its self until such time as it changes hands

as it seems that one can get more for developed sites that show potential ...

i.e - if i have 10 sites - should i be looking for bulk hosting packages that provide 10 gigs (1gig/20,000 per site) ?

or, ... as i suspect ... is this one of those situatiions where one looks for a provider that can offer scalable services where as you require more transfer you can buy it at a reasonable price ... ??

It depends on what kind of traffic each site generates

Most domains very rarely use all the bandwidth set aside for the account.

For example our site searchbin.com was officially launched August 14/03 since that time it has displayed about 12500 pages to 2700 visitors.

During this period Aug 14 - August 28 it has used 296 MB of datatransfer

( Yes I know that tosses out what I said previously but Searchbin uses Dynamic pages and limited graphics)

Off all the hosting clients we manage, I think only 6-7 used more bandwidth than their account allows

sorry to beat a dead horse as it were but ...

based on above, i could loosely say that;

to handle 5000 visitors a month i would need 500 MB

if my site was similiar in design and content to yours

i'll check out your sites now :) thanks!
