The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Don't.
Domaining is like playing the guitar.
The longer you do it, the better you get at it.
Nobody picks one up and plays Paganini right away.
Sure, some people are freaks and show prodigious talent early on and learn much faster than others, more than a few sad souls spin their wheels forever and never seem to get beyond strumming those same couple chords they learned in their first few lessons.

The difference is, cost. Unlike guitar where you can buy an instrument once and it's basically free thereafter (minimal expenses), every domain name you buy is a right/wrong decision that costs money.

The catch 22 is that you're correct in your thinking; you should be buying $500, $1000 domains. The thing is, if you're new to this, there's a 0.00% chance you know what a good $500/$1000 domain name looks like, so you'd be MUCH better off just going to a casino and putting that same $1K on black. At least your odds there are basically 50/50.

Avoid the newbie orgy, you've avoided one big mistake.
You're right to approach this in terms of the aftermarket, but I'm thinking you almost have to light at least a little money on fire doing it the wrong way if for no reason other than to see what the right way looks like.

:talk:

Hi

i recommend you purchase an income stream.

you may be asking....wtf is that?

well, basically it means to buy a few domain names with proven traffic and revenue.

look for .com names in commercial categories.

look for minimum of 3 months of consecutive stats, with earnings of $1.00 or more per month.

once you accumulate $10 > $25 a month earnings, your investment will start to pay for themselves.

as those earnings can pay for future investments and or renewals in your portfolio.

that income also serves as your leverage, should any interested party contact you about purchasing your names.

with an income stream you don't have to sell your names to sustain.

therefore you could afford to hold out for the best offers.

imo...

As with any talk about investing...what is your time frame? This basic assumption (aside from how much money you have) will influence each decision that you make along your way to your first sale.

Are you going to flip your domain name or are you more patient to wait longer to sell it?

I agree with biggie here. My advice is to focus on .com domains. When I started I rushed to get all sorts. Some were great choices others were bad. I'd take that $500 and look for a domain which is making money through adsense etc, you can find these on sites like Flippa. Always ask questions, always check stats and IMO dont take it too seriously. You win some, you lose some but either way have fun doing it! :D

Figure out a way to short the domaining market and you will be sitting pretty on a yacht in the Caribbean counting cash and sipping martinis made by bikini clad bombshells. IMHO

buy and develop 5 domains....spend $30-$50 for each domain....

$5-$10 for domain registration (choose different niche)
$10-$15 for 3-5 unique articles (choose low competitive keywords)
$15-$25 for some SEO (SE submission, directory Submission, S.Bookmarking, Article Submission, LinkWheel etc)

personally i prefer developing a site then just buying a domain....just my personal opinion....

Buy 25 domains with $250, you can get practical experience when you are selling those domains. Use your experience to utilise remaining money.

Good tips from the others. Something else:

Keep how much money you have to yourself
Avoid the cctlds until your generating profit; you should probably avoid them anyway.

What should you buy? Go after what you really want. See if you can make payments, barter product/services or partial cash/barter in exchange for the name. Even if you can't manage to close a deal get a price.

Next buy something that you think you can sell in your local area (futons, ministorage, various services, etc.); only the .com. Set a fair price - $75 - $200 unless the time your spending on selling it turns that price into a less than ideal hourly rate. If you're willing to sell your name in exchange for some of their product then ask at least 2x your asking price. Before you do that ask yourself if you can you sell their product (craigslist, ebay, etc.) in exchange for cash and if it's worth your time.

With $50 and using coupons you could get 5 - 10 .coms; spread purchase over multiple markets.

I think you should as much as you can, before invest.
In this forum, there are many value lesson.
I suggest you should read 3 months before really invest.
Keep money in your pocket until you know what you do. Or you can buy some domains whith $10 each to pratic.
Hope you succes in this business :)

keep the money for now domaining is tough, I will advice spending time doing research into which domains are currently selling, why they are selling and who is buying them. Your question proves you have no clue right now and that is a dangerous way to start a business. if you fail to get the basic fundamentals and understanding of domain names from the get go you will lose more than $500.

Good Luck

Don't buy a domain, instead buy a blog in the aftermarket that receives 10-20 uv's daily or develop your own website in a niche you feel comfortable with.

You can use Wordpress which doesnt cost anything and then start adding content or hire a content writer and do it for you.

That way your money will be better spent while you have much more chances to make some money back.

In the meantime you will learn lot more about domains and web marketing than you ever will by just buying domains.

I suggest that before you buy a domain, you must think about a business that you want to develop, or where you want to occupy and act accordingly.
Usually this is what a so-called end-user thinks, and many times the difference between domainers and customers is not so far away.
To start making the domainer we must first set a strategy, short, middle or long term and carry it forward with perseverance and passion.
Of course, to find good domains need the experience and also a bit of luck, but really in this world, even the "good domain" may not make a difference, as it could make the poor.
So you see the skills of a domainer can go to a particular skill in marketing, in assessing what can be brandable, excellent programmer who develops and sells.
So I think that first of all you must think about what you want to do in the future then your acquisitions. I would start with just one domain and I would try to see if it does well after development. Set a medium-term strategy for it, and see what and how to improve it.
