Parking vs. Affiliate vs. PPC

Ok, I've got a domain that is a one-word .com. I have gotten a lot of interest from investors who want to buy the domain, and there are owners of the .info, .net. .us etc, as well...

I'm wondering what the best way to make money off of this would be. I may be getting a lot of direct visits from people who either come randomly, or mistake it for the official site of the many spinoffs using variations of my domain name out there.

What I'm wondering... what is the best approach for my situation? I am considering parking the site for now, in order to get stats on the traffic and a feel for the PPC potentail.... any other advice for a novice like me?

Domain parking is dead. Unless you enjoy 2 cents or 30 cents per day.

Good to know, so what then is the best alternative?

Alternatives to selling a generic domain:

-Leasing the name
-Development

Traffic (volume & geo) dependent alternatives:
-Parking
-ZeroClick
-Direct Affiliate Linking

I'm not sure how good your single word generic is, but I'd go for leasing the domain. Alternatively if the traffic is good (ie. several 1000 a month) it may be worth monetizing. It seems like you're looking for a long-term return which is good!

It isn't a variant of someone else's trademarked brand/product, is it?

domain parking ain't dead. some people might just have the wrong domains. if you have a decent generic .com with some traffic, it will make you moey. simply park it for a while and during that time you can consider other options to monetize, but at last you make some $.

Just like snicksnack said. Park it, see where it stands and move from there. Now many people park domains and want to see results within hours. Leave the domain on hold at least for 2 weeks gather intel on it.

can you sign up to zeroclick directly?

Domain parking isn't dead. I get $30 - $60 clicks all the time. Yes I can prove it if you feel it's needed. Start with parking and see where it takes you.

Zero click is usually determined by the parking company. I have a few domains on zero clicks with Domainsponsor. They optimized and said it would do better there. (It's doing great)

There are a few services which are zeroclick first, parking second (rather than the other way around) including Elephant-Traffic, TheParkingPlace, and launching soon, our platform, zeropark.com. Our USP is being directly integrated with Bodis!

If you'd like more info shoot me a PM :)

theparkingplace is not really zero click, as they use mainly CPA / email submit offers.

Amazon affiliate program or ShareASale, but make sure that you match the product with what the visitor could be interested in and do not simply put up some random products. When I can't find a product that matches my niche then I use PPC.

As an affiliate, you can make in a single sale what PPC gives you in a year.

You use Affiliate Marketing for All ... Pay per click is best for High Paying Niche Websites

turn it into a content rich site and experiment with the ad channels, you obviously know what the other extensions of the domain are so perhaps content and ads around those are what you are looking for?

Theparkingplace.com and redirect.com now are a full bid system so traffic will earn super high compared to what it did previously years ago

Affiliate tracking is not very accurate for some domain investors, they get zero conversions. Text link advertising is a better option

  1. Work with reputable companies (if a company is cheating or has crappy tracking, you'll find reports of it online.)
  2. Track your own clicks and make sure they match the merchant reports
  3. No conversions doesn't necessarily mean the merchant is cheating, it may just mean the offer is poorly targeted or your page does not convert. It's harder to get someone to buy than to just click.
Amazon is one that works very well for me, YMMV.

What method do you use for tracking clicks

Basically, you use a "hop link" that points to a tracking script, which updates the counter, and redirects to the actual aff link.
If you're using WP there are plugins that can do this.
If you suspect a problem tracking actual purchases, do a test purchase. Have a friend buy something through your link and make sure the purchase tracks. (You can do it yourself if the merchant allows it, but read your program terms - many do not.)
If it doesn't track, contact the affiliate manager. Some merchants are notorious for sales that don't track, and you're best off just avoiding them, but sometimes someone makes a change and code gets nuked.
If it was an honest mistake, the aff manager will be glad you brought it to their attention and see that it's addressed. Their job is to maintain a successful sales channel - the last thing they want is angry affiliates leaving the program. If they don't care and do nothing, dump them.
