Not hugely important, and I don't know if anyone eve really cares, but thought I would mention it.

Blizzard (Blizzard.com) Has recently acquired the domain "Diablo3.com"

Quote from the previous owner of Diablo3.com

Well, there's no point in beating around the bush any longer, so let's get right down to it. A few months ago we were contacted by Blizzard in regards to the Diablo3.com domain name. While they appreciate all the work that's been put into running this big Diablo fan community over the years, they still want the domain name. Hmm, I wonder why?

Diablo3.com now redirects to DiabloFans.com (new home for the previous diablo 3 site.

Looks like he handed it over, anyways, I know Blizzard "Acquires" names all the time, but this is pretty big for the gaming community and all the cult followers of the previous 2 releases. Giving hope to a third release.

Thats pretty nice of a company to actually treat this guy nice and still redirect the domain to his fan site until they are ready to use it. All in all heh i cant wait for diablo 3 :P

Blizzard has been hitting up gaming forums with hidden messages.

A couple of my sites have had them coming in and posting the weirdest crap. It's meant to be a viral campaign amongst gamers and create a buzz about what Blizzard might be doing next...most believe it's Diablo 3 related. I wonder if they are going to make it similar to World of Warcraft.

And for those that think he just "handed it over"...no...he got paid. I can almost guarantee it. I have had fan sites except for MS most are willing to discuss a reasonable payment. It's better than bad publicity and in many cases the fan sites are rather legitimate entities. Gaming is about the community and if you tick the gamers off it will reflect negatively into sales.

I have a feeling $xx,xxx was paid.

Yeah, It was lead to believe that the domain was pretty much handed over. I am pretty sure we aren't going to see a Diablo 3 anytime soon, and if they do launch one, I hope it is nothing like World of Warcraft.

I highly doubt that. More than likely NDA was signed. I can speak from personal experience with dealing with game companies.

Who has been coming in and posting? Blizzard employees? What exactly have they posted?

Are you saying Blizzard has been trying to stir up hype through unofficial channels? If so, it seems to be working

It's hard not to try to read into this acquisition. Obviously they have some interest in the name. Whether it's true or not, we can only hope... Diablo II was my favorite game for several years.

They probably just wish to reduce phishing or things to that sort.

Some gaming news sites are reporting that Blizzard "purchased" the diablo3.com domain from me. This is not the case. As I stated in the above post, if it was my intention to make a profit off of the domain, I could've sold it years ago, but I didn't. When Blizzard spoke to me about their interest in the domain, I was happy to give it to them since they had no problems with us moving the site to diablofans.com and will now be working more closely with us in the future. So yeah, I just wanted to clear that up... there is no monetary exchange taking place, I'm simply giving Blizzard the diablo3 domain.

In the end that could be worth more to them than outright money if they monetize the fan site - having Blizzard work closely with them, perhaps giving them the scoop on stuff quicker than other sites. And it costs Blizzard little or nothing to do.

Yeah they might have negotiated the rights so they can use the site commercially. That's worth money. Also just because he says he didn't make money doesn't mean he didn't. An NDA would prevent him from saying so. Blizzard would NOT want to give out the wrong message and I am sure the forum owner doesn't want to appear greedy.

I still think he got paid.

If he didnt get paid he got something else in return.

Most probably they mite be coming up with an MMORPG. Diablo was one of the best earliest RPGs. It would rock online :D
