Epik only uses its single own accreditation for dropcatching. Once or twice I beat them with my own API based catching-scripts (using multiple registrars). Though that was the exception

Why do people let valuable domains expire?

There are currently 32 4L .com listed on Godaddy Expired Domains and 11 actually dropping in the next 5 days. Like this or last week there were at least 2 4L .com dropped by Dropcatch which just where caught and auctioned last year. As @Lord Antares said, at least those registered or mostly...

Good catch, didn't check that. As the auction by their rules ended on 2017-12-16 20:00 UTC and winning bidder has four days to pay, non-paying bidder can be ruled out. Also strange the domain has whois privacy. While checking out their FAQ about how long you have time to pay stumbled upon this:

How to transfer domain sold on GoDaddy Auctions

The buyer won't be able to buy a domain on GD Auctions without having a Godaddy account. So for domains sold on GD the way is always to push or to transfer the domain to the buyers existing GD account.
