discuss .org ranks better in Google, so why do oeople prefer .net?

When coming to ranking, Big G sings to all extensions: I don't care Who You are, What You are, What You do, As long as You have contents, because that's the stuff which stimulates my algorithm.

advice Building strarter websites and then flipping the domains.

I don't think anyone would be ready to buy a one page site unless the domain itself has some potential or is related directly to someone's interest. In case of the latter, there is natural chance of the domain getting sold without any content.

Remember Donald Trump's tweet "Despite the constant negative press covfefe". Someone regged the domain covfefe-com and it's on sale at flippa with 11 bids at $4050 at the time of writing !! What do you think of the things going on in the minds of the bidders who want this?
