Hi NamePros,

We’re announcing the launch of the .crypto domain extension on 12/11. 50,000 domains have already been registered. Go to https://unstoppabledomains.com/?ref=namepros to find available domains.

You’ve probably all heard about cryptocurrency, but may not be aware that new domain extensions are being launched on blockchains. These domains are not part of the ICANN system. They are stored by the owner, with their private key, not by a registrar like Godaddy. No one can transfer a domain or update it other than the owner. If you store website content on decentralized storage instead of Amazon Web Services, then no one can take down your website other than you.

A blockchain domain + Decentralized storage = An uncensorable website

This is the beginning of an entirely new internet built to protect free speech around the world.

Blockchain domain features
  • No Renewals - Pay once and it’s yours ... forever

  • No Custodian - Domains are stored by the owner. No third party can move or update them

  • Payments - The domain can be used as a payment address for cryptocurrencies. Send Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, or any other currency all to the same domain

  • Uncensorable Websites - Attach domains to content on decentralized storage and create an uncensorable website

  • Transfers - Escrow agents aren’t needed. Transfer to anyone in the world in under 1 minute with no risk of being defrauded

We’ll be moderating this thread and we’d love to hear your thoughts!

Curious if there is any precedent of a governmental or corporate organization attempting to take down a blockchain website - their tactics and what the resolution was.
I haven't seen any particular discussions around a specific website before, but I don'
Thx CJ6, I get it. There's tons of references to using Telegram, but my point was that none of this is relayed at the point of purchase on the end user regarding usage after purchase. Plus it's all done through the Unstoppable site, and I'm playing the Regular Joe here, seeing as Unstoppable has opened this up to the point of even creating ads here on NP and dedicating a thread to the .crypto launch.

By no means am I incapable of delving into exterior sites and research outside of Unstoppable, but my point was that this should be made CLEAR AS DIRT before the fact.

All good, I have patience, but its the principle of the thing. Its become too common practice among startup and new offerings even among established business to work out the bugs and proper tech implentation after the fact. Bad practice, and starting off on the wrong footing.

If you don't know what you're doing, just say it!. Simple as, "We're offering registrations as of xx date, however, we can't guarantee immediate usage due to ongoing efforts to perfect the platform." or whatever.

Thx again CJ, read earlier it was successful for you, (I'm sure you went deeper into it however for it to happen, ie followed on Telegram) so I know it will work eventually. Exciting stuff indeed. But @Unstoppable Domains and any other new startup, just say it from the get-go that there is a staggered or testing phase.
Hey Hotkey,

I appreciate your comments and think there's definitely more we could have done to be more clear on the fact that claiming isn't possible for everyone yet. We'll definitely implement that feedback. What we initially did was tell everyone that it would be live on a specific date. We are now live and opening up claims slowly so we can keep testing. We're sharing our progress in Telegram, but not sending emails because updates need to be made on a daily basis right now. Once anyone can claim, we will send out an email letting them know.

I know that a launch like this sounds a bit sloppy. I don't disagree. But blockchain tech is somewhat different than other software in that once you go on chain, if there's any sort of bug at all, transactions are irreversible and domains could go to the wrong person. It's like a space shuttle launch. We need to solve almost every bug before releasing. Amazon has critical bugs that persist for years. We couldn't release under those circumstances.

All of this is new so we expect launches to continue to be buggy. I think we do know what we're doing though. It's just that there's no room for error so we sometimes delay at the last minute out of an abundance of caution.

Like every other newTLDs all the important and semi important names has been carefully protected, leaving only junks for gullible customers. That's fine.

I'm looking forward to hosting my site with the blockchain network with blockchain domain name. That sounds really promising.

It has happened before -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New.net

At one point it offered .travel, .kids, and .xxx but those were removed when they conflicted with domains proposed to ICANN in the first round of creation of new domain names in the primary root since the early history of the DNS

ICANN does not recognize or care about alternate roots.
Isn't that part of the point here? Not to mention the concept of decentralization.

Most premium domains have not been claimed yet. We are going to open them up for sale soon. We have a separate list of protected domains that are associated with brands. Those are non-generic terms

The only domains that should be protected are domains in common use by one brand. Generic terms, which are typically the most desirable, are not protected and will be released or auctioned. We'll have updates on premium domain releases in the coming weeks.

Previous attempts at an alternate DNS system didn't make sense. ICANN was the best system for organizing the internet namespace until smart contract platforms like ethereum become viable - circa 2017.

What's new is that a domain registry can cheaply access the security of a public blockchain and offer domains that are controlled by the owner. Self custody is the biggest difference between a blockchain domain and the current DNS system or any prior alternate root attempts.

Grit Brokerage is already brokering one-word .crypto (like bonus.crypto) for $10k each.🙄

While it would be interesting to see registration statistics for blockchain extensions like .ETH, .ZIL, .BIT and .CRYPTO, etc I suspect aftermarket sales (investor to another unrelated party) will be no more common than existing alternative extensions. We all have different hobbies and interests so it is possible soccer fans invested in crypto might want a soccer.crypto. If their primary use case is to facilitate wallet transfers, how much are they going to be willing to pay if they only have 1% of their assets in crypto?

Two things here. First, while wallet transfers are a currently the primary use for blockchain domains, that will change over time. Hosting, file sharing, decentralized apps and other uses will develop to surpass the current use of wallet transfers.

Second, though cryptocurrency is up and down, the blockchain development space is continuing to grow with technology enterprise's leading the way. Blockchain technology will continue to be a technology that disrupts many industries. Question is, will the domain industry be disrupted?

What is a protected domain?
A trademarked brand or one that is in common use by a brand. And yes, the list is currently overly inclusive of some generic terms. They will be removed the list and made available, not just given to the brands that have the .com.

So tell me how “store” is protected? That’s about as generic as it gets.

Shouldn't be. That's a top tier domain. Will be removed.

Claiming a .CRYPTO domain....

Connect an Ethereum Web3 wallet to claim your domain.

Would you care to explain how to do that?

So... The .crypto domains still can not be claimed... Or am I wrong?
Are they live or still waiting for the launch? Just wondering cause things are not so clear to me at this time.

Btw, I think you are doing a great job. Revolution baby!

I came across a recent YouTube video which showed someone claiming some long names for illustrative purposes. They .mentioned Metamask which I have heard of but do not know how to use.

meta mask is a chrome plugin or extension I believe.

You should be able to claim your .crypto domains now (if there is no trademark issues). I believe that it is now open for everyone.

This idea reminds me of PayPal.me and them allowing people to get things like PayPal.me/deposit. It hasn’t went well or better yet, isn’t needed.

When people want to send funds via PayPal, they use an email address. Nobody asks what your cute PayPal.me address is.

An email address you can remember, a wallet address you cannot.. thats why crypto users use QR codes, a crypto domain would be an addition to QR use

I just threw my hat in the ring, I bought 'PayMyWallet.Crypto' and claimed it on Trustwallet and it says pending claim so must be still transferring on the blockchain, can't spend too much time on this...will check back later

Pretty cool, its arrived in my TrustWallet under 'collectibles'... I tried connecting my bitcoin address to it but haven't tried sending funds to it yet...a lot to learn!

Yea! I got some claimed as well. The coolest part is the custodianship. It's like owning your own registrar and registry.
