I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

[News] Want to grab good domain name? Burn mid-night oil. Well-known investor Feng ZHOU (周峰) stayed awake at 3am and seized Chuangtouquan .com in last 4 minutes of auction. Chuangtouquan is 3-pin and stands for 创投圈 (venture capitalist community), which matches same company name (创投圈) Zhou already owns using domain name vc.cn.

[News] Old Jingtailan company Beijing Fa Lang Chang (北京珐琅厂) launched website using Chinese IDN.IDN 景泰蓝.网址 (Jingtailan.netaddress) to redirect to 5L official site BJFLC .com. Jingtailan (Cloisonne) is an ancient technique used in decorating metalwork objects.

[News] QKJ .com sold for $36k (240k yuan) in August 18 auction. QKJ may mean 取款机 (automated teller machine).

[News] PZL .com sold for high 5 figures (mid 6-figure yuan) in private transaction. PZL may mean 拍照乐 (fun in taking picture).

Thanks for the link here! I tried to post a reply on the other thread but need to upgrade.

I wanted to thank you there as I read your blog/website a week ago and subscribed too. It was helpful to me for some translation information as I own a NNNN.com domain, I've had it for 20 years that I will sell eventually- and that is what actually inspired me to look into this domaining business. I had this unused, unattended email account listed on Whois and was always loaded with spam... but only recently realized after about 2 years of not reviewing it... found it was filled with 200+ unsolicited offers, some of which were chinese in origin. So I started seaching the web and found your site! Your translations are really cool and were helpful. I like your candidness and writing style too, it's a very different perspective (from Chinese viewpoint) that I have never ventured into exploring.
I like your jumping in and generously contributing to the forum by sharing results of your hard work with the community. I want to thank you too. Keep sharing!

[News] Startup Yi Fang Wan (一房网=one house net) launched real estate website on iFang .com. "i" is wrong choice as domain name now means 爱房 (love house). "e" or "Yi" would be better.

[News] .win exceeded 1m registrations. As of August 18, 1,002,491 .win domain names were registered, making .win the 4th largest new extension in China, after .xyz (6.5m), ,top (.32m), and .wang (1.1m).

[News] 181.xyz and 186.xyz sold for over $3k (20k yuan) each in West.cn auction. 181 rhymes with 要不要 (want it or not?) and 186 要发了 (going to make a fortune).

[News] 029.xyz sold for $1.4k (9,200 yuan) in August 21 auction. 029 is dialing code of Xian.

[News] Short is good and .cm sells too. mp.cm, us.cm, and or.cm sold for $1,410 (9,400 yuan), $1,050 (7,000 yuan), and $750 (5000 yuan) respectively in recent West.cn auction. MP may mean 买票 (buy ticket) and OR may mean 偶然 (by chance).

[News] 705 .com went to China for 6 figures (7-figure yuan) recently, according to a post on domain forum DNBBS .com. 705 rhymes with 起来玩 (get up and play).

Thanks for your kind words. I have stopped reporting domain news as I'm very busy on Linkedin writing for executives in China. But, there are still some Chinese folks writing about domain news. Two I'm aware of are: @YumicomDomain on Twitter and DNQueen.net by @Cynthia (?).

i rhymes with 爱 (love) and F may be 发 (making a fortune), so the name may mean "love making a fortune".

I have not come across any hyphenated domain name used by companies in China.

The letter U is quite useful especially as the first letter of a short domain name. My Nov 23 post covers the many meanings U can take on.

Recently an executive in the domain industry asked me to comment on the main differences between China and the west in domain names, so I wrote a blog post about it.

There are definitely plenty of short dash domains used in China in .com and in .cn

I don't know, but beeb.com.cn is owned by a bank. The domain name and the name of bank do not seem to match.

@Goncalo

Let's look at how a Chinese buyer ends up liking BJW.COM.

Example: 北京网(Beijing web) is obviously a good name.

When translated to Pinyin:
北->Bei 京->Jing 网->Wang
So, you can buy BeiJingWang.com.

Or, better (as it is easier to remember)
BJW.COM (just take the initial of each of the 3 Pinyin words)

That explains why 3L are more popular than their fully spelled-out words.
I understand that the Chinese are not into .io. However they do own a few .io extentions. I own BJW.io (Beijing Network) This would make a great startup and more affordable than the .com .cn or .net :xf.smile:
