opinion How to choose the right domain for you.

How to choose the correct domain for you.

I suggest using godaddy.com to buy a domain.

Choosing the correct domain can be a hard choice, especially if you have never had experience with domains before. There are always people asking "If I buy a domain should I get a .net, .org, .com or .info?"
There is a simple answer; it depends on the purpose of your site. To help you choose an extension, visit Understanding Domain Extensions
this explains what each extension means.

After you have chosen what kind of extension you want, you have to choose your domain name. If you're new to creating a domain, you're very unlikely to get your first choice of a domain name, because you're probably thinking of a name that has already been taken. Domain sites help us get past this problem; all sites you buy domains off have a tool to check if a domain name is available or not. You can also go to this site and you can type in a key word or subject that your domain is based off, it will then suggest domain names DomainWhiz.net: domain name suggestions, domain name ideas, domain name generator

If a domain is not available that doesn't mean you can't still buy it. If you can get in contact with the domain holder then you might be able to buy it off them, but they will probably try and sell it at a higher price then they bought it for.

After choosing your name and extension most sites will ask you "would you also like to buy privacy and email storage?" so you can make emails like @yourdomain.com and it will probably try sell you a whole lot of other stuff. The privacy thing is more for people who would want there name and other details to be kept private. So its up to you if you want to buy it or not. The email storage you don't really need unless your going to be doing web hosting with the site you bought the domain off. If your going to be buying web hosting or getting free web hosting off another site they will usually offer you email storage in the deal.

I don't agree with you manson. Various extensions work better for different kinds of website applications. It all depends upon the site or end user's needs. A great .com is usually more valuable to domainers, but not always - depends upon many factors and these types of factors are discussed extensively on NamePros.

I wouldn't trade the .org I use for my non-profit for the .com - if I didn't already own it ... Of course when I regged the domain - I also nabbed the .net and .com - because they were available - but they are redirected and the site is masked to only show the .org in the addy bar.

Well it depends , though .com is a top level domain but if you are having good seo work and articles / posts etc on any domain example .in , .pk etc etc then your domain will be at top no matters its .com / net / org

godaddy C$11.32*
1and1 C$7.40

why would any domainer with a lot of domain want to pay so much more?

Only a noob can ask this question.

1and1 sucks, i dont care if they cost $3 I wouldnt reg. with them.

Why, you ask? just search "1and1" and you will see.

Beside that 1and1 sucks, GoDaddy is a wellknown registrar, also amongs non-domainers.

1and1 it cost to push a domain between accounts, almost all the other registrars its free to push between accounts.

It's a nightmare to transfer domain names out. you have to go through infinite steps to transfer your domain name out, it is easier to become an astronaut.

1and1 if the miracle should happen and you are succesful to transfer your domain name out, 1and1 still charge you the yearly reg. fee every single year, over and over and over again.

And whats more funny is that if you don't pay the reg. fee for a domain name you loooong time ago have transfered out, then your other domain names in that account is stuck, until you pay the reg. fee for a domain name that is NOT with 1and1 anymore. :)

If you reject to pay, and try to explain to the 1and1 support, why you don't think it is right to pay for a new reg. fee, when the domain name is not at them anymore, they just ignore your explanation and they keep sending the same copy/past standard text, without trying to read what it is you are trying to explain to them.

And suddenly your account is blocked and you cant transfer any remaining domain names out from them.

So dear Wayne, if you are not convinced try search for "1and1", but I am warning you, if you have any domains with 1and1 DO NOT read the search results alone and DO NOT read it at night.

But please, don't listen to me, learn it the hard way. :)

Thats just dumb. What happens when you can't access your account at Satan's registrar and they dont reply to your support-mails and you can't transfer the domains out or renew so they get deleted and backordered by somebody else? Or worse if they just keep the domains after it has expired. :)

I would rather pay more to have my domains secure, instead of saving a few bucks and risk my valuabledomains.
