If xyz gets heavily adopted in China.. it's generic enough an extension to become even more popular in the rest of the world.. regardless of the disbelievers

If XYZ gets the proper permissions to sell unhindered then this investment will pay off.

I'm not sure why the registry would auction 8.xyz off before approval for the extension to operate on it's own in China; unless they plan to use the sale as some kind of leverage.

Time will tell I guess.

There is so much nonsense involved in having a website if you are a Chinese citizen. It's a wonder they place so much value on domains when you can barely get online and have to jump through hoops to do so.

I think the number of Chinese online is a very large percentage of the world's online community. And there are thousands of Chinese websites. Those that don't have pc's smartphones etc can go to Internet theatres where there are hundreds of terminals.

Online sales via the likes of AliBaba and Taobao are gihuge!

8 has,and always will be,huge in China as it basically means wealth. The bit after the dot is important but usually the shorter the better and then generally .com,.cn descending.

If you are not aiming at China in the future you will miss a lot of potential business.

If this domain was auctioned on ebay, we would be reading a completely headline. ..."8.xyz meets reserve $888"

This auction was hyped by 4.cn.

Yes, these are facts, however I definitely won't be 'aiming' at china with 4L.net's and .xyz domains.

I think you misunderstood.

If I were the .xyz registry I would have held onto 8.xyz until after approval of independent operation within China. Them selling it beforehand is odd.

For those that don't understand what that means, or aren't aware, .xyz must sell their domains through an approved third party in China. .XYZ has pledged to create their own managing segment that would act in the same way the current 3rd party does.

It's basically an 'ethics and standards' and approval issue that China imposes on all of its registrars - so essentially .XYZ is trying to get red of the political loopholes they are currently jumping through. If .XYZ was a pre-approved extension for the Chinese government, that would be a significant 'game changer' for the extension.

As investor the auctioning of this domain NOW would send me signals that it's either not going to happen or .XYZ is having some kind of cash flow problem.

I don't have a problem with your analysis but you might be over thinking things, first things first Verisign needs to get things situated over in China, so no one should be buying any .com. More than likely these things will get taken care of. I have spoken to a few working on the situation that by dealing with registrars outside of China they can hold the domains and be ok.

Most buying all these numeric domains in China are not looking to build websites, they are being used as almost a pseudo currency in some cases and others held for investment.

I am not sure about the not aiming at China with 4L.net, they are buying them, in private, on NameJet, DropCatch, Go Daddy.

I am not sure about the not aiming at China with 4L.net, they are buying them, in private, on NameJet, DropCatch, Go Daddy.

4L.net just seems like forced 'follow the leader' purchasing instead of a natural rise of value... I hate to say it, but the word 'bubble' does come to mind - with all PinYin domains.

It would follow suit that since they use domains as currency, their stock market just popped a bubble (China spent $236 billion on its stock market bailout) then Chinese domains will eventually reflect that.

In times of economic hardship there is always a flight to quality, but if people have no confidence or money to invest in business, they won’t buy domains. So either PinYin domains will be immune to the overall Chinese economy, or the Chinese domains that rose with the economy will fall hard with the economy in delayed fashion.

Following the U.S. crash top dollar domains fell as much as 20% the following year.

Every new situation is a different situation, but history does tend to repeat itself.

I think buying trends (such as 8's) at low prices is smart, because within 2-4 years the value will increase, but overall I think that the Chinese 4L.net is an affect of the Chinese 4L.com market, and those .net's won't have an upside that is worth investing in today.
