If you ever do succeed well with a name like that, please reply to this thread so I can have a look; and share some of your insights with us.
I am, all 11 yrs of web dev and 22 yrs of advertising and marketing.
it is hardly possible to SEO and rank well any website like .pro on competitive keywords. There are some exeptions but .com is king, I already post this many time, Google don't see equal with .com, you can try prove me that I'm wrong but I know 100% sure what I' talking about. That's why big domainers buy .com for millions every years.
You're leaving an important point out though. Cars.com will rank higher than Cars.pro, but cars.pro would rank higher than mycoolcar.com for the term cars. Its just simple seo.
I develop at weekends and I'm not convinced things are as simple as Samit makes out.
Actually it is that simple, create a system, rinse and repeat, works every time. Spend all your time doing just one site and if it doesn't take off, you're in a hole on it. Both for time and for money.
Setting up a Joomla / WP site takes about 30 minutes at max, if you know what you're doing. Maintenance is pretty simple and can be automated for the large part. Content is easy enough to purchase and design doesn't take much doing either. And it allows you to test proof of concept at a low cost. Thats what we're doing with Paintball.pro and are pretty pleased with the results. Whether it eventually makes a lot of money or no is pure speculation till it reaches the full potential it can.
I understand that custom development seems the way forward, but all it really takes is multi-million dollar marketing if you're playing that game. Twitter is just a status update, versions of which have been available for as long as I can remember. But getting Larry King and Ashton Kutcher arguing about who can get more followers, getting Oprah to twitter, thats the key, not the software itself.
Now I know I cant spend millions and I also know I don't want to go down the VC and funding stage deal either. So that leaves me with very limited options, not that I don't do custom code or customisations, both WP & Joomla are just content publishing systems without the plugins / components that expand the usage. I prefer using the smaller sites x multiple site approach, works for me, might not for everyone based on your skills - both development and seo. But if you're on a limited budget it allows you to go forward, instead of blaming lack of funds, for trying out any new idea.
