Hello everybody. :)

I'm new here, but already very active. It's a great community with a bunch of great people.

I have a couple brief questions if you don't mind.

How do those little green boxes/reputation points work?

Also, what are those little stars under some people's title?

I haven't been able to find information on this.

Thank you.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
GoDaddyGoDaddy
-db-The green boxes each represent 100 reputation points, which you can get from other users leaving positive rep for you, or from positive trader rating updates (left by people you buy/sell/trade with).
The faded stars represent 6 mos. membership, the regular star 1 year, and I believe I've seen a rotating star, which must be for 2-year members (I'm guessing on that one).
Welcome to NamePros! :)

yandig, thank you very much.

For the information, the welcome and your courtesy.

Thank you sincerely. :)

By the way, where/how do you leave positive reputation points for somebody?

It's a different place then "Trader Rating" right?

click on the gray "scales" near the bottom left of the post you want to leave rep for ;)

...also, if you leave your user name in the reputation comments line, the person receiving the rep boost will know where it came from. Sometimes, you get positive rep from someone, but don't know who it's from...

Thank you once again, yandig.

I have just contributed to your positive rep; for explaining how to use the positive rep feature.

Hehe... too perfect. :D

Good explanation, yandig. :) You are right about the rotating star. I just got mine a few days ago.

OK, got more questions....

How do you check your own reputation points?

And how do you know when somebody leaves new comments about you?

By the way gentlemen, is there already a place on the site that explains all this type stuff?

RJ, how did people get rotating stars before you?

Click "User CP" in the upper left hand corner of the page.
Once there you'll see "Latest Reputation Received " about 1/2 way down on the middle of the page!

Same way :)
You can see it by clicking "UserCP" in the upper left-hand corner.
Or, by clicking on your own "trader rating" to see trader comments.

Enjoy!

WebDesignTalk was opened in Aug 2002, NamePros opened Feb 2003 (we merged December '03). There are some members from WDT who joined before me.

ok, now i have a question.. what's the difference between the lighter green and darker green squares? is it something about the number of rep points per how high your post count is??

The shade of the green squares is only a "pretty" factor.
The more little green squares you get, the lighter the next one gets.
Each little green block is 100 reputation points.

Great thread! I've been here nearly a year and I didn't know what the stars/green boxes were either.I just found out recently what reputation points were! I wish I knew sooner,I could have left alot of good people alot of good reputation points.

If you hover over the green boxes (or turn off images in firefox) you see some rather odd quotes such as "<username> is on a distinguished road". Do they have any particular meaning, or are they just random? I never noticed them until I once had images off and noticed they printed twice.

Don't know for sure, but I have noticed that the number of boxes doesn't necessarily match the pop up message. I have seen people with ~ 20 Trader rating and 3 green boxes, and they still have the "bob is on a distinguished road message", while others have 3 boxes and have different messages. I'm thinking that the messages are tied to non-trade feedback from other users, while the boxes are tied to the reputation point total. Again I'm guessing... :-/

Perhaps it is based on a certain formula?

IE: x points in x amount of time = x quote

I'm sure someone will let us in on how it works.

From RJ's post:

OK, I'll give this a shot.

1) When you click "add reputation", how much will it add? In 10's, or 20's or....?

Every user has "reputation power" to give reputation to others, this equals the number of points that is given when they leaves positive reputation on others.

Reputation power is determined by several factors including length of membership, number of posts, and their own reputation score. A new user with 10 posts would likely have reputation power of 1. The highest I've seen is 11. All staff members have a reputation power of 10.

2) Are there special meaning to the different colour of the green little bars? Some are darker colored, some are lighter.

None really, they just get lighter the more you have.

3) When you put your cursor over your green bars, it will give some descriptions. Can someone list all the descriptions with the required reputation points?

From lowest to highest are listed here.

User is infamous around these parts
User can only hope to improve
User has a little shameless behaviour in the past
User is an unknown quantity at this point
User is on a distinguished road
User will become famous soon enough
User has a spectacular aura about
User is a jewel in the rough
User is just really nice
User is a glorious beacon of light
User is a name known to all
User is a splendid one to behold
User has much to be proud of
User has a brilliant future
User has a reputation beyond repute

4) Is reputation related to the colour of the green bars? Will I be able to see what are all my bad reputation points?

Higher reputation scores have more green bars. If you see red bars, that user has a negative reputation. Anything green is positive.

5) If someone leave me an unjustified bad reputation, after investigations, will the mods change my reputation points or nothing can be done?

For the most part, we've left the negative reputation as is unless its obvious that the user was only leaving it to be mean or unfair. Often, if I or the other staff feel the post in question was not deserving of a negative reputation rating we'll leave a positive one to coutner it. Remember, staff ratings count for 10 points while most of the negative reputations that are unfairly given I've noticed are worth 1 or 2. So you may come out ahead anyway.

Some other notes,

Reputation ratings only count after that user has rated 19 other members. Meaning you can't rate the same person twice in a row, you'll have to rate 20 members. This cuts down on the effect of users who may have grudge against certain users or purposely intend to raise or lower reputation scores of others.

Don't take any single negative reputation rating personally. Other members can't see your negative reputation ratings and they really don't count as much as say Trader Ratings would. It's really more entertainment purposes, while the Trader Rating is your actual "reputation" on the site.

Hope this helps,

RJ

Very nice, detailed thread. Am adding to bookmarks for use when I see the question come up down stream.

Hey, I wonder if it is possible to trade downward. I'd much rather have a "spectacular aura", than be "just really nice". :hehe: Just kidding, -RJ-!
