Montenegro, the country that declared independence from Yugoslavia last year, was just assigned .ME as their official country code top level domain.

If I were them, I'd be very thankful that Macau already had .MO taken because I really like .ME much better. Hopefully in time they end up with reasonable registration rates and a solid registration platform, unlike .YU. This should be a popular TLD with registrants.

Story here,

What a great extension with endless possibilities so long as the registration fees and renewal fees make market sense.
This extension .me, will open the whole state of Maine up for exploring. Here are but two examples:

Bangor.ME and Kennebunkport.ME . I can't wait!!!

I am going to grab some and make big money getting end users to buy them. I already have the target market, just need the domain name. :)

What can we do if they group a list of names as premiums? Just like .MOBI and .TV? :D

below is the answer sahsas :)

They did not launch it in the first half of the year because ICANN delegated them the .me tld on September 11th. So I think they will need some preparation.

From their site:
As we have previously stated, this approval ICANN has to forward to the Ministry of Commerce of the USA for consideration.
The following step is to forward request for registration of our domain to DNS root zones. This process usually takes several weeks!

So I guess it will not be that soon.

Hi :)

I’m glad that you like .me already. Me too ;)

There is no precise information about launching time for this ccTLD yet.

I think that it will be expensive...my guess is that it will be ca. 50 EUR per domain name and that it will be probably list of premium domain names. Montenegrin government realizes that it is great opportunity for them ($$$).

One more thing: .me is new ccTLD, but it is inheritor of .cg.yu. Every company with .cg.yu domain name will keep its previous domain name automatically, but with new extension or will have advantage to register new .me domain name.

I've been waiting to see who would bring this up! ;)
This will not be like a landrush since many of the names are already taken, so keep that in mind.

My guess is Sam, along with a few other smart domainers have already contacted most of the owners and tried to cut a deal...

Burn! :hehe:

Unfortunately, this may not be the landrush party that everyone is hoping it will be. Nic.yu has A LOT of restrictions for .co.yu and only national institutions and federal agencies with special status are able to register a top-level .yu domain. If similar restrictions are created for .me, we are pretty much screwed.

As far as owners trying to cut a deal on a .co.yu domain before .me launches, that is out of the question. You have to own a company in Yugoslavia to register a .yu and you can't sell or lease the name after it's reg'd.

Let's all hope that Montenegro's registry sees the benefits of open registration. On a positive note, there are a lot of name hacks mentioned in this thread that will not be going to prior owners of .co.yu domains. I have checked several names in .co.yu and many are not taken. Unfortunately, Sex.co.yu, XXX.co.yu, Poker.co.yu, Casino.co.yu, and Hit.co.yu are already reg'd. :(

Policy regulations
FOR SUB-DOMAIN ASSIGNMENT UNDER TOP LEVEL DOMAIN OF YUGOSLAVIA (YU)
(Last revised: 10-APR-2000)

1. INTRODUCTORY NOTES

This document defines the rules and regulations for Internet domain assignment the ISO 3166 country code top level domain (ccTLD) of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (YU).

2. REGULATIONS FOR DOMAIN ASSIGNMENT

Domain assignment and domain registration in the YU TLD table are FREE OF CHARGE AT ALL CONDITIONS, with the following restrictions:

* Only companies and organizations located in Yugoslavia are eligible to apply for a domain name.
* Individuals are not eligible to obtain a domain name.
* Only ONE domain per one registrant is allowed.

* Domain name is a public resource, registered to a company or an organization (registrant) stated in the part 2 of the domain application form. Once registered, a domain name can't be taken over by another party. The domain name can't be sold or leased to a third party.

Domain name registration for foreign companies and organisations are allowed if and only if they have official representatives located in Yugoslavia. In such cases, please provide the address of the representative office instead of real company address in the registration form. Foreign companies and organisations without local representative offices are NOT ELIGIBLE to apply.

Domain name registrant must meet the following technical requirements before submitting a domain name request:

* At least 2 (two) fully operational domain name servers (DNS), configured for the requested domain name.
* SThe domain name servers may be located anywhere on the Internet, but they must be connected permanently (7x24).
* SThe domain name servers must be configured properly.

Should the registrant fail to meet the mentioned technical requirements, the request will be refused. In such a case the registrant will be advised on further steps.

3. DOMAIN NAMING CONVENTIONS

According to the recent recommendations, the YU ccTLD is divided into the following second-level domains: AC.YU, CO.YU, ORG.YU and EDU.YU.

* If the registrant is an academic organization (e.g. university, institute), registered at the Ministry of Science and Technology of Serbia, Montenegro or the Federal Ministry of Science and Environment, it will be registered in the "academical" domain (AC.YU).
* If the registrant is an educational organization (primary school, high school, special status school, registered with the Ministry of Education of Serbia or Montenegro) or a company, whose primary orientation is education and training, it may apply for the "education" domain (EDU.YU).
* If the registrant is a corporation (private, mixed, public, social), registered according to the national Corporate Law, it will be registered in the "corporative" domain (CO.YU).
* If the registrant is an independent organization (professional, political, non-political, independent etc.), registered according to the appropriate national laws (i.e. it has the legal right to act on the area of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) it will be registered in the domain reserved for "organizations" (ORG.YU). This domain can be also suitable for cultural organizations, like museums, theaters etc.
* Governmental institutions of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as well as appropriate institutions of its Republics (Serbia and Montenegro) will be registered under separate subdomains of YU ccTLD.
* National institutions and agencies with special status, directly controlled by the Federal government (so-called: "Savezni zavodi") may also apply for the registration directly under the TLD of Yugoslavia (YU).

Well there goes that landrush. No need for everyone to jump on it now. I guess that includes .me!

I was actually thinking about getting a few when they came out.

Looks like they will be defending their stand on this one. This just re-enforces the landrush won't happen.

I have some good news for everybody.

I've sent them an email, and the reply I've gotten is that non-residents of
Montenegro will also be capable of registering a .me domain.

They said that it will try to open the registration of .me before the New Years 2008.

.me happy :)

+rep ? :hehe:
