Back in 2003-2005, when I first really got into web development, I owed a webmaster resource site called Hughra.com. At the time, I knew nothing about SEO, or anything fancy other than my Graphic Design Skills and my ability to code HTML and some mild PHP. I had no money to promote my site as I was still in my mid teens, but yet I somehow managed to receive upwards 200+ unique hits daily on my site in a few months. Leading to upwards 1000+ daily within a years time. Even today, several years after the sites existence, Im still able to find sites that back link to the domain via Google and still receive a small amount of traffic to the domain.
Unlike the sites I create today where I in fact know a lot about SEO and have money to promote my sites, I used Affiliate Boxes. The boxes were 88 x 31px and I would exchange them with similar sites such as the infamous zymic.com, switchdesigns, and gxdesigns.
It seems today I forgot about the value of exchanging links with others as I became more business orientated, and realized how linking to a similar site can potentially steal customers from myself. Then it hit me, its free advertising and its not all about my sales, its about my customers, and if I have a decent business model I wouldn't have anything to worry about.
If I could manage to draw over 200 hits daily from some few link exchanges with other sites in just under 4 months, and a 1000+ in a years time, why would one discard this strategy? There's several sites on the internet today that have top-notch SEO and content, but have yet to break over the 100 unique daily mark. Its a small price to pay but its totally worth the cost!!
SEO, Advertising, and Link Exchange compiled together creates a powerhouse that drives endless numbers of visitors to ones site.
