Hi,

About two weeks ago I was semi interested in registering a new name. After typing the name into GoDaddy a few times that day, I finally went back to register it BUT IT HAD BEEN TAKEN!

It is not the sort of name that anyone would ordinarily dream up and it seemed like too much of a coincidence that it went on the same day as I'd been typing it in.

I decided to check back a week later, and found that it had been dropped. So I decided to do a little experiment.

Having read here on NamePros that GoDaddy were suspected of selling or otherwise making available their lookup lists, I decided to try the same thing but on a different registrar.

I typed this name into Moniker a few times yesterday. Guess what? By the evening, the name had once again been taken! I suspect that once the registrant/registrar realises it isn't a traffic domain it will get dropped again.

Do registrars sell their lookup lists or is it just a case of extreme bad luck?

The moral of this story? If you like a name and see that it's free, do your research and grab it as fast as you can before it goes into someone elses pocket.
Matt.

I have heard of this type of thing before. I am a firm believer that if you find an available .com name, the company will hold on to it. However i would not suspcet the same being true for .biz org net etc. So if you want the name buy the name, dont mess around

Thanks for the response. It got dropped again recently, so I tried a search on eurodns and it showed as available. I only searched once and only at this registrar. Guess what? It was snapped up within a couple of hours! I wonder if it will get dropped a 3rd time? If so, I might pick it up and put it on here for a valuation!

This is interesting... I don't see why anyone would buy a domain because someone searched for it once... Perhaps if it was searched for several times by different people, but not by just one person. Hmph, it wouldn't surprise me if GoDaddy was selling their search list and that's who bought the domain you wanted.

If they think that you want the name, and it has traffic already they are going to reg it to see if it has any traffic. Is so they will buy it and resell it.

Dropped again! As it was registered each time by the same organization, I wonder if I have spyware. Not likely as I have 3 different antispy programs and keep them updated and run them regularly. This is the only other possible explanation.

Thanks for your replies.

Matt.

what was the name?

Question: Is it just me or can a name be dropped after a couple of days. Isn't the drop process usually at least a months long process?

I will tell you once I have secured it or it is retained by another registrant. It dropped 2 days ago and got picked up again! After all this I am going to try to acquire it even though it's not the type of name I usually go for.

Some registrars offer domain tasting whereby a registrant can test the domain for traffic and return it within a set period (up to 5 days) for a full refund if they are not satisfied. That's what keeps happening with this reg. Once cancelled, the domain can go straight back to the registry and avoid the usual drop process.

Moniker offer this (within 4 days of reg) and GoDaddy offers a refund too (within 5 days) although it's not guaranteed. A few other registrars also offer this service and it has been invaluable to me.

Hi,
Zonefiles are available for everyone, and a lot of people create their own droplists. So I think there is no special reason why it was registered a few times.
I can say that EuroDNS do not have a searchlist, searches are cached on some slow ccTLDยดs to lower the load to the registry, this lists are not public and deleted every few hours. But a lot of registrars do this.
I would wonder if GoDaddy sells a searchlist.
Some people taste thousands of Domains each day. I think there is nothing to worry about.
