Hi,
About two weeks ago I was semi interested in registering a new name. After typing the name into GoDaddy a few times that day, I finally went back to register it BUT IT HAD BEEN TAKEN!
It is not the sort of name that anyone would ordinarily dream up and it seemed like too much of a coincidence that it went on the same day as I'd been typing it in.
I decided to check back a week later, and found that it had been dropped. So I decided to do a little experiment.
Having read here on NamePros that GoDaddy were suspected of selling or otherwise making available their lookup lists, I decided to try the same thing but on a different registrar.
I typed this name into Moniker a few times yesterday. Guess what? By the evening, the name had once again been taken! I suspect that once the registrant/registrar realises it isn't a traffic domain it will get dropped again.
Do registrars sell their lookup lists or is it just a case of extreme bad luck?
The moral of this story? If you like a name and see that it's free, do your research and grab it as fast as you can before it goes into someone elses pocket.
Matt.
