八 is the Chinese symbol for '8'. They are in exact same spot on a Chinese keyboard. Chinese often use numbers as we do though, like 1,2,3...ect, so that's reason for question. Anyways, 八 is registered in every extension that it's possible in, as far as I know. The list of extensions allowing an IDN 八 is short. Furthermore, a singular '8' isn't available in most extensions, we all know 1 character domains are extremely rare, hence '888' is quite premium. I am under the impression (by a brief search) that .ws is one of the more popular CC in China, for whatever reason.

Taken from first paragraph of Wikipedia concerning the numerology usage:
Today speakers of Chinese use three written numeral systems: the system of Arabic numerals used world-wide, and two indigenous systems. The more familiar indigenous system is based on Chinese characters that correspond to numerals in the spoken language. These are shared with other languages of the Chinese cultural sphere such as Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. Most people and institutions in China primarily use the Arabic system for convenience, with traditional Chinese numerals used in finance, mainly for writing amounts on checks, banknotes, some ceremonial occasions, some boxes, and on commercials.
