I wanna link exchange with a few new wordpress blogs I started. Instead of putting the links in the footer. I thought I would put them in the blogroll.. Will this work like any other link exchange?

SEO purpouses as well.. Will this help me gain pagerank?

It probably won't do you any harm, though Google isn't a big fan of reciprocal links so it mightn't do wonders for your PR.

It shouldn't make any difference where you put the link. Just make sure it's relevant to your site, and not on some unrelated topic. That way Google might just give you some love. :lol:
