Where's the link for this 2nd Level launch, wot? .TW does only 3rd Level, and the Neulevel site says nothing about an impending 2LD launch??

Second-level Taiwanese Domain Name Registrations Expected to Launch Soon
The Taiwanese registry is expected to launch .TW second-level domain registrations in the next few months for current third-level domain holders and open registrations to the public in September on a first-come, first-served basis. The registry has not confirmed the exact launch dates.

VeriSign Digital Brand Management Services clients who have existing third-level .TW domains will receive an email with a list of second-level .TW domains for which they can apply before the second-level domain name is opened to general registrations.

why is English speaking is so important for the value of the domain name?

I was just going to write that .tw was a horrible idea for anything besides geo-targeted markets (AKA: If you want to sell in Taiwan or to Taiwanese companies, great!). The idea for "The Web" is kinda funny, but won't catch on for broad appeal. However, not a horrible extension just from a country point of view.

But then I saw the above, and changed my mind.

I love .tw in comparison to any of those 2nd level things.

It's all relative, so .tw gets my vote ;)

many of the above comments should go straight into the wastepaper bin. If .tw comes online as ccTLD, then the yardstick to be used is to compare Taiwan with Hong Kong or Singapore or even Korea. Websites which can provide expat or travel or accommodation names will have some value.

Hello cache,

The reason for my question was not because it's so important to the extension's value as a whole, but because it's important to me as a domain seller to know if it's worthwhile to register English words in a particular extension.

You see what I mean? :)

I guess I'm just unlucky to always find taxi drivers who fall into that 0.9% who don't speak English :)

Even in Taipei the level of English isn't on par with Hong Kong or Singapore. Outside the major cities you sometimes need a GPS to confirm you aren't on the mainland.

That basically sums it up. Great for local businesses but you aren't going to see a lot of six figure .TWs on the weekly top sales list.

yes, I understand.
So do you think the extension itself has good value?
Taiwan can convert their currency to US$, they should be able just register .com or .net cheaply, and their culture and economy is pretty open, why do they need their own extension?

Sounds like 99.1 % of taxi drivers in most countries

No probs for me you know I am always serious and grumpy hardly a funny bone in my body- well maybe 2
Tx for being a good sport. I wasn't feeling any pain last night and I've needed a laugh, even if it was directed at my own stupid joke. Tx for sharing the info and giving us all the heads up. Most of us are aware of the current economic growth and have read the forecasts predicting that China, (and India), will be among the major players, (if not the major player), within the next 10-15 yrs., and it will be interesting to see how the .cctlds play out on both a regional and global scale.

Reading articles or watching TV to gain a spin on what is going on in countries in other parts of the world has it's limitations and can't replace living there and being on the inside. I don't travel, nearly as much as I used to, so I really enjoy the international flavor of the forum and I really do value the ideas and perspectives that I am exposed to here, by all of you "foreigners".
PS I know, "Look who's talking!" hehe Well, time to shove off and go to work. Anyone need a taxi?

I've been to Taiwan (also China and India) and I noticed that a lot of the giant billboards in Taipei have .com.tw on them.

I think a large part of the value of cctlds like .IN and .CN may actually reside in outsiders looking for an "authoritative, perhaps credible" door into these seemingly cryptic marketplaces - emerging markets with humongous pent up consumer demand.

I'm not sure about the springboard potential of the Taiwan market though, it seems that the Taiwanese are also looking to China for their own growth, old rivalries aside.

The domain gravitas in Asia seems to point towards .CN, maybe .IN. .TW, like .SG, may be a tad too limp to be ridden as a serious domain investment.

Sometimes domainers make an error in just focussing on the general level of English language capability in the language of the country concerned. A company based in Taiwan and selling to the outside world might well have an English lang website with a .tw extension. The selection of appropriate names with relevance to the Taiwanese economy or culture will be worthwhile and a challenge. Blind registration of generic names is not advised. eg examples of some .jp names regged.

I occasionally make a lowball bid on this name at Sedo, NOTHNG happens- it stays as "for sale" even though the names have yet to be released. :td:

Come on Sedo - what gives :?

Interesting. I wonder if it is for VeriSign Digital Brand Management Services clients only and what does it mean exactly? Anybody who owns 3rd level domain gets this opportunity (TWNIC regulations?) or only some Verisign clients?
