Up north politicians are getting primed for the race for the next prime minister's race and US/Canada relations is one of major debates being tossed around....

Same Sex Marriage (right = no, liberal = ~yes)

Increased Military Budget (right = maybe, liberal = no)

Bush was right about Iraq? (right = "avoid the question but
perhaps yes", liberal = "avoid the question but @#&$ no")

Economics? (Mad Cow, SARS, and a rediculous US deficit = scary)

Predictions anyone?

In Canada Liberal will win again with a very right wing PM this time around. How about the US?

The fact is marketing and he has plenty time to change the view of many people.

How can anyone compete against bush's marketing campaign?
Did you know he has over 131.8 million right now and he hasnt even started to do anything yet. bush is expected to have another 50 mill added.

Other candates got only about less than 45 mil and they're blowing it fast. Bush has more money than all the other wannabies combined (dont quote me on that).

It would be absolutely suicide and they all know it.
They're just hope'n to compete against bush.. and be remembered for next time. Plant a seed in ppls minds.

I dont vote... however. Theres bigger problems.

This seems like a thread filled with mostly informed people, which is nice to see.

Just a few points I'd like to make (I'm not a fan of bush)

1. It was the United States who put Saddam in power to serve as a buffer between the west (US) and the people of Iraq and surrounding countries. Why did they do this? Oil.

2. Saddam's power corrupted him, he tried to invide Kuwait in the early 90s. The US intervened. Why? Oil. If it was for more they would've continued the war into Iraq.

3. Saddam's become more of a pain to the US than they had intended over the last few years. The War on Terrorism has been used as an excuse to rid him of power. Why? Oil.

Now, just a few notes on me. I do support the war on terrorism, I don't support the war in Iraq. Why? They're not in there to stop terror. Yes Saddam has done horrible things and its better that he's gone - but you have to think of the precedent this sets for future leaders.

your answer, OIL is opinion based not on facts, but on political opposition. (Im not saying this offensively, so please.. follow me here). Saddam was not installed by us. He may have been supported by us during the Iran/Iraq war. but for good reason...

the US was terrified that if Iran won that war.. the entire middle east would become a islamic theocracy. We all know too well how well Islamic theocracies work (9-11).. even 20 years before it happened. We supported a nation (not him per se') that we felt at the time was in our best interests. Was it? Hard to say because the Mid East, while muslim.. is not an Islamic theocracy today. Amen.

I would still take Saddam over Tehran myself though... Imagine the horrors there...

2. Saddam's power corrupted him, he tried to invide Kuwait in the early 90s. The US intervened. Why? Oil. If it was for more they would've continued the war into Iraq.

Well I disagree as to the reasoning you state.. but regardless... what would be wrong if that WAS the reason? Do you want to pay $6/gallon for oil?

We liberated a nation and its people from (by your admitance) a tyrant, and your complaining of the reasoning behind the outcome?

3. Saddam's become more of a pain to the US than they had intended over the last few years. The War on Terrorism has been used as an excuse to rid him of power. Why? Oil.

I, as stated in my previous posts in this thread.. do not care of the reason or method used to rid him of power. ( No, I do not agree with you as to the reasons). so long as he is gone.. Amen.

If there was Oil in WWII Germany.. would it have been "wrong" for us to have gone after Hitler?
How about Japan? You do know that the Japanese Attacked Pearl Harbor for oil.. so our involvment in WWII WAS based on Oil.

How do you feel now?

Like many foreigners you are totally misinformed about the US doing that for Oil. There is not a thread of truth to it, just a false stereotype of the US by those who are not knowledgable enough to think of other reasons and also fired up and brainwashed by all the anti-US Media in other nations. It's all BS.

Hey LeeRyder. im curious where your facts come from . Im not trying to cause conflict but really more for my person knowledge. Im really want to know about the Japanese invading pearl harbor for oil

Pearlharbor.org does say we put a embargo on them in 1940 for the exports of steel, scrap iron, and aviation fuel to Japan and then in 1941 the U.S.,Britain, and the Netherlands froze Japanese assets . And that prevented them from buying oil But was that the reason for the attack ?

Like i said this is for personal knowledge.

All i will say is I think the president has and is spending to much money on these efforts. And of course we will spend to rebuild the same cities we destroyed. I guess only He knows his true reasons for the war. As US citizens we are and always will be on a need to know basis ...and just like always this is one of these times we dont need to know :)

Have a great weekend everyone

Leeryder you seem tobe very patriotic but you have some harsh solutions. 600,000 count what?

Do you want me to add the deaths in afghanistan etc.
I'm afraid what the total may be.
I think I won't vote because I'll be voting for the better of 2 evils and that's wrong.
Matter of fact I start a new thread on this matter cause I'm changing the topic.

But Iraq War shouldn't of happened.
And that's what they call it a war. It's not.
It because going after one man while killings 10's of thousand to get. then he hets him and 10's of thousands more die. This an excellent topic maybe I should write a book like micheal moore.

Thanks for your responses guys but I do not appreciate being called misinformed. I consider myself quite educated on not only world history but American history in particular (why? it was mroe exciting that Canadian history).

The attack on Pearl Harbour was in a way about getting Oil, but it was mostly because Japan was running out of Oil and they had to strike then or do nothing. Their strike was deadly and cowardly, unfortunately.

As far as Saddam Hussein and the Iraq war is concerned I support ridding Saddam Hussein of his powers - but I support it only through UN support. The UN was set up to keep world peace and prevent future wars. Unfortunately, Mr. Bush set the UN back quite a few years with his "Coalition of the Willing" and false documents stating Iraq could attack in 45 minutes.

Yes, his State of the Nation address (aka the start of his political campaign for re-election) listed a number of allies in the Coalition that could convince many of their support. However, many of these countries were bullied into the coalition because the US has these countries owing them money for one reason or another and offered them compensation if they joined.

In many ways, Mr. Bush bought his coalition.

Yep that Blair like a puppet master.
I indeed believe I would never call you misinformed for it's indeed your opinion.
American isn't bigger than the UN. and they'll find that out soon.

Exactly. Japan knew that they had less than a one year supply of fuel left if they didnt act "NOW'. Hnece the reason why their ambassador was in Washington beggin gfor and promising peace as the planes were warming their engines on the carrier deck in preparation for the assualt on Pearl Harbor.

Leeryder you seem tobe very patriotic but you have some harsh solutions. 600,000 count what?

Harsh solutions? I havent offered or suggested any solutions so far.
But I will gladly do so.

1) Invade Palestine. They want to say they are "Slaves" to someone.. give them a reason.
2) Cut off the entire Mid east. Do not buy any oil form them. Drill the arctic circle, use the money to fund research into alternative fuels. When the OPEC nations come crying (and trust me, they will) we can offer them .05 per gallon. Take it or leave it. No more paying them to blow people up.
3) Inform every dictator they are next, and mean it.
4) Lob 30 cruise missiles into N Korea. Advise them they have 30 days to apologize for threatening to Nuke LA, to open their boarders and to surrender or have Nukes lkand next month in the exact same positions those cruise missiles did. No more F'ing around.
5)Go HELP Russia fight chechnya. No more strong arming other nations to "be nice to the poor little terrorists" such as the case there.
6) re-name Patriot fries french fries.. then invade france and call it "Kentucky II, the revenge" so everyone is happy :) (ok..maybe not such a good idea lol)
etc etc etc

The US bows to no one. Not the UN and not to France or Germany.

Tell me, why isnt France or Germany being punished for violating the embargos placed on Iraq?
The UN is an armless pussy. It has no power without the US and the US will not allow it to have power over us.
Just last year the UN tried to dictate to .(ok..maybe 3 years ago now actually) Clinton that we outlaw spanking. lmao.. right.. I hardly think we shall place any global BS in this land.

Yes, his State of the Nation address (aka the start of his political campaign for re-election) listed a number of allies in the Coalition that could convince many of their support. thats just the thing. When something happens somewhere in the world, and the US does nothing all we here is "USA! Why arent you helping?
when we do... we hear "USA, Get the F out!"

make up your damned minds already...

Listen..Id much prefer the USA go it alone from here on out. We have nothing to loose but whiners, socialists and "OMG!" BMW's. Who cares.

Once Europe repays us for rebuilding the ENTIRE continet from WWII.. then we can talk about who owes whom.

and btw Jeanco.. where was the UN during the Serbian Massacers?

Why arent you saying thank you for us going over their.. risking our ass' and saving all those muslims from slaughter?

Oh ya..it wasnt UN sanctioned either. much like Iraq).. but your not whining about that why? Because you cant blame it on oil? or is it because you just dont like Bush?

When a non Americans opinion matters in American Politics.. then we shall listen.

Lee ryder may I warn if all the nations decided to goto war with the U.S. the us will easily fall. For china can freeze the U>S> assets. And they would be attacked from all over. Terrorsit would be used against them. Plus if the U>S> were to stop buying all from the middle east. will think about. he uS doesn't produce all but uses a lot of it. where they gonna get all from.

another if the world has an embargo on the us they will again crumble.

thank you

ok lets take this unlikely scenario.

1) You would have to make it accross the oceans. Do you believe for a second that either
A: You could sneak over without us knowing it
B: When we saw you and knew your intentions, that we would not just drop a nuke on the pacific or atlantic oceans?

2) What military can keep up with the US? Did you know that the US Defense budget is larger than the rest of the worlds.. COMBINED?

3) Withou the US economy, do you truly believe the rest of the globe could survive as it does?

4) 79% of Europes military prowes is US based tech. (Fighters, our old ships, computers..etc). In essence, you have our "junk" that we dont use any more or degraded versions of what we still use.

5) The French would be on your side.. Loss by proxy right there.

well i dont know about all that stuff ...but it would not be as easy The US just dropping a nuke. And i have to somewhat agree....if you continue to try to strong arm every country we come in contact with we will eventually get what is coming to us. . I just hope im not alive to see that day .

so very true.
The US isn't that big of a super power.
One little super atom bomb from N. korea will solve the problem.
