I don't understand why www.dot.tk don't sell .tk domain names? They are so useful and loads of people use them. Some people actually do pay for them, so why do they still give them away for free?

I don't understand!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Because at the moment they are the only provider of free TLDs. They make money with popups that open when you load thier pages. Since they are the only free provider, they get TONS of customers. If they went pay to reg, then they wouldn't get as many signups.

Normal TLDs makes money by registration fees
dot.tk makes money with advertisements

ok, but the popup that opens is advertising their site, not anything else!

If more people compete to have good keywords for that extension (because it is free), went to develop it (without needing a single cent), they can resell it and earn 100% profit. If let's say 10 do that, then another 10 will follow this profit method and so forth. By that time, many people will compete for more free domains which in return increase the popularity of this extension without the need for advertisements. That'll attract alot of webmasters rather than plain domain buyers. In return, there will be more developed sites than parked sites. I think that's what .tk thought of doing in the first place, to make sure people always want their .tk. Not sure how many .tk are developed, but I remembered many of my friends getting a free .tk when it was first released to design their own site which still exist till now.

They don't sell, because you can register one for free, as well.. it's not that great of an extension.

Actually you can register .tk ccTLDs like any other domains for a fee. Most people just apparently tend to use their free service, which means that you don't become the legal registrant, but instead lease it for free from DotTK. Too bad that this option has been degraded byt the FREEDOMAIN.TK offerings, which means that .tk domains have become the cheapest of the cheap domains out there, meaning their value is low, as few know about there being also actual registrations.

Just an excerpt:

PAIDDOMAIN.TK
One of the restrictions of free registrations with a FREEDOMAIN.TK domain is that you need content to receive 25 hits per 90 days. And FREEDOMAIN.TK holders do NOT hold the license rights of the particular domain name.

With buying your domain name, as a PAIDDOMAIN.TK, you will get a lot of benefits:
# no restrictions on hits per 90 days
# you have LICENSED the domain name, making it yours, were you are eligable to sell it later
# possibility to run your own DNS
# you can keep all services, such as URL forwarding, mail forwarding and traffic management with any PAIDDOMAIN.TK

You pay, we deliver and you can figure out how and when to start using your address. For just USD 9.95 per year you obtain the normal rights you would get with any paid domain registration and become the legal registrant of the domain name.

There's also resellers for DotTK. No official list available on them, but at least DD24 is. A search on Google/Teoma/*insert your favourite search engine* will most likely find more.
