Why Did The # Bug Bite Me?

When I started acruing domain names 3 months ago I had made a promise to myself to stick with .com domain names without hyphens or numbers..... And here I was today bidding on a 5 Number DN?

As a brand new domainer, I would appreciate someone explaining why # domain names have grown in popularity? Thanks in advance.
