Why Are Bad Domain Names A Magnet For Outrageous Prices?

Just to clarify.... I am talking reseller to reseller prices not end user.
It seems more and more I am silenced by the audacity/Enthusiasm of some domainers to ask unbelievable prices for utter rubbish. I will not point out the threads but I am sure you know what I am talking about.

Normally these threads pop up selling a list of names stating $xxx for these and $xxxx for these etc but the names are trash. For example I have a domain for auction at the moment ArticlePublishers.net here at namepros (which will likely sell for $20), now I know its not the best domain name but taking a look at some of the other domains on offer makes my domain look really good :yell:

Am I the only one noticing this, can I get a amen? I think the problem may be newbies registering bad names and then still trying to make BIG $$$$ on the mistake :(

Anyway that is my gripe for the day off to bed now :xf.love:

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

JasMate, I know exactly what you mean. I just ignore those sales threads and chuckle a bit. I have too many points against me for unintentional sales thread crashing anyway :'(

One thing I have noticed and I am by far not judging anyones expertise at the staff level. But there has been quite a few domains in the past couple months that were allowed to be submitted to the "high priced" domains section that just confused the hell out of me.

That said, I'd love to know what the qualifications are for that sales area.

HasRob........... :)

Post a sale thread like you normally would, and it will go into a special section that the staff views, at which point it's either approved or declined. If approved, it will show up on the board (usually the same day, or within 24 hours). If declined, it will be sent to thread heaven. We try to select the best names submitted, with consideration given to fair coverage of members and extensions.

I just happen to be checking it out the other day as I was wondering the same thing myself.

It only takes one person to purchase a domain name that others think is rubbish. I've seen recent sales on sedo and afternic at $x,xxx for names that I thought were complete doggydoo. However, somebody with the funds thought otherwise. It could be a language difference, a perceived value of that exact name, or some other reason for the purchase.

The first domain I ever hand-regged, I tried to immediately sell for mid-high xxx. No one was interested the first year, but I ended up selling it the following year for mid xxx.

What seems like garbage now may become gold later.

this is so true- i hate the appraisal areas- i used to submit names and then i was watching "reg fee" names get alot more on the open market.
there will awlays be a supply/demand issue that will help price guide some names- but it all boils down to who wants what, and how bad- the high priced thread here is nonsense- i agreee on that one too

Sometimes domains are like ideas: you just gotta believe in them and stay the course no matter what others think....not all the time, but when the gut feeling won't let you quit.

i read somewhere that investors are looking for alternative investments because Bond returns are all time low, commodity & oil prices are high. Maybe domain investment is the right choice. having said that, newbies might have been over optimistic with their names and started to ask outrageous amount of monies for that.

it reminds of me when i started..... after reading few article and posts,i thought i can reg few names and sell it for thousands within 3mths :xf.love: and pay my uni fees. after nearly 4 years i'm still holding that name. i'm ashamed of myself.... :'( but i'm showing a sign of remorse now

What EVERYONE has to remember .....

If you own something (Domains or other items) It's your business and Only your business what asking price you add to it ;)

Yes , we all see domains that we just can't figure out Why people ask such high prices for them .... But many times - The domain may not be something you know about ... Outside your expertise or niche area.

But in the end - It is the owner/sellers Right to ask what ever price they wish :tu:

I am holding a few .com names that is not that great, but since the .net is held by
a real company, the selling price can not come down.

i think inexperience is the main cause for overpricing sub standard names..im sure everyone had high hopes with there first domain :hehe:
but yeah, i agree it does get a bit tiresome on the sales forum...maybe divide it up into sections dependant on value with a moderator to pre-approve names (e.g. like "High Priced Domains" and have sections like "Reg Fee", "<$100" etc....)

I am a firm believer in letting people price domains as they wish without blaming them for being "unrealistic", because I've seen a lot of "worthless" domains sell for strangely high prices. But if you were to blame it on anything, I think that the most common cause of truly "overpriced" domains is inexerienced domainers registering/buying crappy domains because they don't know any better, and then using that same blindness when pricing their names.

I get the whole "your names are overpriced!" thing a lot, but I don't let it bother me or affect my business technique. I don't mind waiting for the right buyers to come along - ones who will pay a price that is satisfactory to both me and that buyer - and in the end that works just fine for me.

It's funny that while people are sick of "overpriced" names,
they never seem to tire of "noobs" letting names go for below
value because they just don't know any better...
