Could someone please tell me, if a doamin name listed like this is really "pending delete" or not?

How could it be pending delete when the expiration date is Jan 21 2005?

Yes its in pending delete, exp. date doesnt matter.

In what situation could this occur? How can it not be expired, but pending delete?

Possibilies:
-Owner requested deletion.
-Registrar requested deletion due to CC chargeback or fraud.
-Lost in WIPO or UDRP and new winner wants deleted instead of active.
-Violation of some registry agreement like false name or whois contacts, non-compliance of registry such as .biz not being used for business (although not likely), or .us without proper nexus, Falsified sunrise period TM claim, etc.

I've occassionally seen the infamous Register.com "unpaid names department" domains fall in this category. There's one I'm watching now that fits this category.

yes some registrars offer money back gurantee so when you use this option the names are deleted and not expired yet
