I'm looking for recommendations for a "lightweight" cart software. I think PrestaShop and Magento are way too "heavy". Does anyone have any suggestions?

One thing which confuses me, is that an HTML Cart Theme. Does that require an underlying cart to work, or are they fully functioning stand-alone carts?

Try OsCommerce or ZenCart.
They are fully functional carts, with lot of payment module options.

Have a look at CS-Cart - or are you looking for Free software?

If you want free software then Presta Shop is great, it has been fine for me. I know that its quite heavy but it has been the best for me. Oscommerce is also good.

Could you explain why you think PrestaShop is "Heavy"? I do not understand the term. Does it have too many features that you would not use or something like that? If so, what cart features are you looking for only?

A super lightweight alternative is to use a barebones install of WordPress, then install WP Simple Cart. It uses PayPal Pro as the default payment option (accepts PP, credit cards, debit cards and e-cheques) and there are hacks for other payment gateways as well. Works well and is extremely easy to set up and manage -- perfect for small/low item stores.

Opencart is amazing and opensource.

I actually selected opencart, but even that is laden with features. I'm pleased with the results. But all I really wanted is an extremely lightweight cart which uses paypal, credit cards. No fuss no muss.

@pixelbypixel - I prefer free :) I think a lot of the free software works well enough with good enough support. But don't get me wrong. I'm not averse to paying for software, but my requirements don't usually run to commercial software specifications. I buy code all the time on CodeCanyon/ThemeForest, for example.

@Frank - I must be the only person in the world who cannot get their head around WP. I find it extremely complicated to understand how it works. Every WP install I have ever undertaken has never turned out anything like I envisaged. I have a complete block when it comes to developing with WP. But maybe I'll try an experiment with WP & WP Simple Cart. Thank you for the tip.
