I've recently purchased a few domains and looking to get into this properly, I've being doing alot of research and trying not to rush into anything.

I've bought 3 domains so far:

californiabreaks.com - First one, I came up with it, had a look around what was selling and thought it was good!

pwned.tv - Got this one on a closeout on GD, started to add a bit of content on it over the last few days and looking for ways to increase traffic.. Thats the bit im unsure on!

ipodvids.com - After further reading, I understand they're is a lot of TM issues with names like this but I have also seen sites like this go for alot, again another one I picked up on a closeout!

I'm really eager to learn and put the time in, The main thing I am concerntrating on atm is Pwned.tv as the others have no content on, Where is the best place to start reading or things to start doing to increase my traffic? I've added funny videos to it because I feel it best suite the DN, Also what advice would people offer for the other two?

I currently have them parked with Sedo.

Cheers

Sam

First, I would drop ipodvids.com (Ipod is a tm and you don't want to be messing with Trademarks).

My suggestion is to focus on expiring domains. There are far better domains dropping each day. You should check out sites like Dropday.com, zfbot.com, dnjuice.com.

Yes, try to stay away from new registrations and focus on aftermarket - expireing domains (namejet, snapnames, pool, godaddy aftermarket), cheap domain deals (sedo, afternic ...) and forums.

And delete that ipod domain :)

If these are new registrations, then you have an uphill task in developing and promoting them.
Ways to increase traffic? Everyone wants that.:) Boils down to starting from scratch with the traditional way of doing it ~ SEO, linking, etc.

I just visited Pwned.tv ~ great idea! :tu:

californiabreaks could be a surfing site, mostly a develop value only name.

Do you have a digital cam recorder? Make some funny videos, or hire someone to do it for you if you want original content. Its a good domain by the way.

ipodvids, another cool domain, you should make some research on the market and see what your competitors are adding on their websites.

Good Luck!

Thanks for all the advice guys! Im still pretty new to all this, with pwned.tv I like the idea of original content as clearly it's what gives you an edge, I've been looking into using tubemogul to distribute videos with watermarking of my site, would I be able to get away with it with videos I've found on YouTube? Or can I only do it on original content?

I like the idea of making c-breaks into a surfing website, never even crossed my mind! Might be more of a niche than a holiday site of some sort! Cheers :)

As far as ipodvids goes, I know obviously iPod is a TM but iPodvids kinda make sense? Videos converted to mp4 etc? Would I get away with that?

Sam,

You are too focused on development instead building a domain portfolio. Are you sure this is the right choice? To me it looks like the wrong choice. Instead spending your time and energy on projects that will only cost you money and maybe make you only a few pennies, I would ditch the whole development idea, let that useless pwned.tv drop or give it away for free, and then focus on building a portfolio.

It is possible to make a living by only selling and buying domain names. There are many people here who do domaining as a full time job.

I'm not one of them yet but I think you will need at least 2000 average quality domains to do that. By average quality I means domains that are slightly better than your californiabreaks.com and ipodvids.com.

I think it is possible to build such a portfolio in 3 years from scratch, with a small initial investment like $500 USD.

Your next step should be to buy about 10 more domains but make sure they are a little better quality than those two. Then find end users and sell some of them. Then reinvest the money to new domains and focus on building a bigger portfolio.
