What's the new expiry date after domain is transferred?

Hi, I've just made my very first domain transfer from Moniker to GD. The name at Moniker has an expiry date of 12/20/2008. When I transferred it to GD, the name has a new expiry date of 2/4/2009. Shouldn't the new expiry date be 1 year from 12/20/2008 to 12/20/2009? At least, thats how I think it should work, no?

By transferring the domains, you do not reregister it. It just tranfers it.
