What's the best hit Counter?

Finally got my site launched and over the past two weeks its got around 1800 unique hits according to AWstats in Cpanel. Although the total uniques is around 2500 it says total hits is 521,000 + pages = 163,000 which I don't really understand. Any ideas?

Anyway, wondering if anyone can suggest a good stats counter I can use for the site. Something free, reliable, unintrusive and with as much stat reports as possible. I will be considering paid counters soon - so do suggest them if you have used/experienced them.

It would be a great advantage if it was password protected too. I don't mind the visitors being able to view total hits/daily hits etc but the indepth stats such as refferals/time of visit etc would prefer to be kept protected only for the site admins to view.

The site is mainly CSS except for the photo gallery which is G2. Thank you in advance for your help - expect rep. :D

im using whatcounter.com it's a hidden counter and stats hence the name,
also masterstats.com is one.

Google Analytics is the best (so I'm told)... since it's google I have no doubt.

I was once told the best stat counters are on your server, but when I mentioned it many people objected so I suppose you can try Google Analytics.

Thank you all for you suggestions, I will be looking into them today. So far I've tested out OneStat.com - the free version, it seems quite nice - but I will definately look at other alternatives.

The google analytics one is so slow....

It causes your site to load a ton slower I don't recommend it at all.

I used to use a free stats counter that counted just about everything awstats did in its statistics.

I don't remember what it was called though... I'll look for it and if i find it i'll let you know.

I say give google analytics a try, if you request an invitation from their page you will probably get it in a couple days. It has loads of stats/info, been using it like 3 weeks and still keep finding stuff I didn't know was there..

I haven't suffered any slowdown in pages loading since I started using it, but I have noticed it on a few other sites, of those all the ones I checked the source on had the code near the top of the page instead of putting it just before the closing body tag.
