What's in a name..

I'm working on a name for my freelance web and logo design 'business'. I have a few names in mind, but one in particular, containing the word 'logo' appeals. The name fits the rest of my criteria, but I worry it might alienate an entire target audience (web design clients).

My question is, would you be less inclined to procure web design services from a company that labels themselves logosomething.com?

I personally think if you are a small local business then you have to be descriptive to that locality, only if you have millions of investment can you afford to have a name that has absolutely no relation to what you do as in the case of Google and Amazon.

By telling people that this is what I do, this is my domain without any bullshit then I think that is far better.

If I was looking for logo's for example the last place I would go is to a place with a completely random name that was only bought because it was aavailable, I would go to the guy with the domain ManchesterLogos.com (Because I live in the area and it makes sense to me to be able to remember it)

The question you have to ask yourself is are you planning on selling it in a few months? because if so then my example would limit you.

I would suggest not restricting yourself to just logos, but go for something more generic - say "designs".

if i saw logosomething.com i would expect them to only do logos and also would think there probally more of the art type of people then full web disigners.

I think names come down to everything on the internet, and I judge whether I want to visit a website based upon its name. I do think limiting your self is bad, even if you did only do logo for now, you have to think about the future as well and pick a more board name such as nmridul said.

Go for a more generic word such as design instead if you do webdesign to.

Also take the .logo name and keep it.
You might want to try and also run a logo business if that works out to be more fun or give you more/better work.

There's nothing wrong with the word "logo," particularly if you are appealing to a business clientรจle. Free associating, "corporate" and "business" leap immediately to mind. How do you make a logo? You design it, of course. Use logo.

I'd go for something more open ended, a two-word brandable/semi-generic, incase you want to expand to other areas, it also makes it sound like you are much more than a one-trick pony.

*****media.com

*****solutions.com

*****web.com

etc

.

A business name represents the cornerstone of your business. It must convey your services and or products in one succinct, statement. In this case, by using the word "LOGO" you alienate your business away from your primary service of web design. Usually, web design firms brand with evocative or creative names to build their business.

Let me know if I can help as I can offer a few free suggestions,

It's pretty much been mentioned but I will add my voice here.

I do a little web design/logo design and I've wrestled with the exact question.

I think if you are ONLY going to offer logos you go with a domain name with "logo" in it.

But if you will have other services then by having "logo" in the name the potential customer thinks, "oh these guys do logos and they are great at it . . .but web design . . . maybe they are new at this." and they will probably go somewhere else for the web design work.

If you do both get a name that is more open like design, studio and other words mentioned above that won't limit you.
