Hey guys.
Im just starting out learning web design. I have a few ideas abouts some sites I want to build, but I am not sure what I need to know. Could anyone tell me how the following sites were made, i.e. PHP, Javascript etc, so I know where to focus my attention?

The sites are:
www.ebay.co.uk - auction trading (as if you didn't know)
www.themafiaboss.com - online game

Cheers for any help you can give
Jay

Well, the Mafia Boss seems like a PHP page with embedded javascript linked to a MySQL database. I haven't checked the site out completely but if there's an online game, most likely it's flash or java.

As for ebay, it's written in a combination of languages and definately WAYYY too complex for a beginner. If you are beginning, focus your attention on HTML first, then progress to PHP and mysql, then consider some other languages.

Actually, I oddly skipped the HTML phase and jumped right on to PHP & MySQL and did pretty fine (with a lil help of Dreamweaver). But yea, it is hard to code sometimes, with little knoweledge of HTML.. I made a mistake.

True, but HTML is the most basic language and not knowing it will make everything that much harder. Plus, HTML is surprisingly easy to learn. I started by deconstructing tutorials and figuring out what the tags meant. Some time later I searched up all the tags and realized that (although I did not know their names..) I had used them correctly. Big sites with huge databases are particularly prone to hackers so not only do you need to know php and mysql well, you must know how to safeguard your site.

Cheers for all the input guys, it really helps. I do know the basics of HTML but I can't wait to get on to PHP/MySQL. Is that all that ebay uses (HTML, PHP and MySQL)?
Many Thanks

As JYM said, eBay uses much more than just that. There are some free auction scripts out there, but nothing close to the complexity of eBay.

eBay runs on Microsoft IIS. They use a combination of DLL's and ASP I believe. I could be wrong, but it is quite complex.
