What is the google phantom

what is the google phantom? its new thig to me please tell me about it

Where did you encounter that term as it seems to be the first time I hear of it (and I try to be constantly updated). The only thing close to that term I can think of, is a last year update of Google which was undisclosed and came out shortly before Penguin 2.0. Will be glad to learn more info if you can share

Yeah, Penguin 2.0 superseded it. Google released a "phantom" update because their previous update didn't have the desired effect they wanted to achieve. Its no longer relevant to SEO.

As far as I know it was a "quick fix".

If you think of each Google update as a service pack, "phantom" was just a minor update fixing whatever issue they deemed they were having.

Yeah, but for any novice user with scarce knowledge in the field, the forums are often a viable source of information. Such people cannot determine Right from Wrong and may very well end up shooting themselves in the foot because of a completely false information they adopt. So the blame is definitely shared. Its just only one party suffers from it.

I worked it out. They are banned from posting in certain forums until they have done a number of posts so they post short pointless posts elsewhere to reach this. What annoys me most is they usually bump a really old topic.

And to get signature links. Short posts are fine, as long as they contribute to the conversation, and as far as the intelligence of what someone posts , since that's subjective we TRY to give benefit of the doubt... language familiarity and all that ...
If anyone ever sees an obvious spam drop, feel free to click the "report" link. - that way someone will see it and deal with it.

Google can make updates as often or as infrequently as they want - with or without telling you. A Phantom update is when there is enough shift in the search world to indicate something has happened...so the answer might not be completely right but is it really 100% wrong?

Spam now comes in Teriyaki!

"Phantom" was an unannounced Google update which occurred on May 9, 2013. If you did not see a traffic drop on that day, you were not affected by it. All Google would say was that it was NOT a "Penguin" update (which was anticipated, but actually happened on May 22)

Glen Gabe did an analysis of sites affected - cross linking between "sister" sites was one of several possible factors.

That's what I assumed in my first post basically. But I had doubts that OP would be asking about some half-explained update that happened more than an year ago

In the period around May 9th, there were many reports of an algorithm update (also verified by high MozCast activity). The exact nature of this update was unknown, but many sites reported significant traffic loss.

Like previously stated its an old update that isn't applicable. Unlike end user software where some people might not update or upgrade... this update has long been superseded and is live amongst all the servers.
