What is the best way to pick a name

I think different people has different ways to pick a name either to register or to buy.

I use 1-2-3 steps before selecting a name:

- Checking Google search
- Checking Overture
- Checking extensions (i.e. .com .net .org .info .ws) to see if they're taken.

What about you? Can you share?

Lets see... generally I pick names that have been deleted or I purchase them from someone else so with that said.

Determine if I want in this "type" of market and the competition
Do I want to buy/sell/develop? Long term or quick buck?
Check if available
Check Keywords (overture and wordtrackers)
Check Marketleap for links if any
Check the name for Alexa and Pagerank if any
Purchase

Also try looking at Overture bids for the keyword(s) in the domain. That can be useful.

I also check Google adwords stats, which shows how many times an ad based on the keyword would appear (which could also mean how many times the keyword is searched) and how much advertisers are paying for that keyword.

For foreign words, I check international tlds like de, fr, cn, etc.

Personally I check the overture stats, the google stats, archive.org, extensions, the feasibility of the market and the bid for the domain itself on sites such as google and overture!

the best way to pick a name is to close your eyes and hope you can think of that million dollar domain that hasnt been taken im sure theres 1 out there somewhere
