How many web 3 domains are you even aware of?

...exactly, they're worthless.

Let's examine why:

1. They're not decentralized.
2. They're not free to keep.
3. Their future is uncertain.
4. They can be taken away from you at any time for whatever reason (no seriously, read the terms of service). You'll still have an encrypted link in your wallet, but it will be useless.
5. Too many alternatives: Handshake, Unstoppable Domains, etc. (all allowing you to create the same domains) and each of them require different browser plug-ins to access.
6. Difficult to access: like implied above, you need special plug-ins, and no one is downloading a plug-in to access your site.
7. They aren't accessed with https, can't use SSL, etc. So using the aforementioned plug-ins or accessing these sites is a huge security risk.
8. They don't show up in search engines.
9. In order to set up a site with them you need either a VPS or dedicated server (both of which are expensive options and require technical know-how) since they're not compatible with regular/simple hosting services.

It was one of the smart contract scams (alongside NFT:s, play-to-earn games, and shitcoins) that only idiots fell for.

This wasn't so much "reinventing the wheel" as it was trying to sell a square wheel. Heck, even the shitcoin grifters were smart enough to use normal domains like .co, .io, and .xyz when promoting their grifts.
