What is Cookie Stuffing?

Does anyone know what Cookie Stuffing is?

I heard the term used on another website and was wondering what it means.

It is a type of fraud. Cookie pushing means setting a cookie containing your affiliate tracking information in someone's browser without their consciously visiting the merchant's site through your affiliate link.

The slimeball pushing the cookie gets credit for the sale, often stealing commission from someone who actually deserved it.

eBay is currently suing Digital point's Shawn Hogan (and 2 others) for cookie stuffing.

Don't do it.

Definitely don't plan on doing it, was just curious as to what it was. That was pretty good explanation of it. I had never heard of the term before.

Cookie stuffing is not always fraud. There are instances when you can get permission from your affiliate manager to stuff cookies if your are running a legit operation.

Cookie Stuffing is simply the act of dropping a cookie to a user.

Basically, it is a script that automatically adds a "cookie" to someone's browser when they visit your site. It can actually be used to add hundreds of cookies from different affiliates, so that if you visit someone's site, and then you go off to Amazon, Ebay or wherever, the original site's owner will get credit for directing you to the affiliate site, even though you never clicked on anything.

Most affiliates frown on cookie stuffing, if it's not stated as illegal in their TOS. I know that the EBAY Partner Network banned several hundred users recently for cookie stuffing.

Cookie stuffing is a 'method' affiliates use to increase the amount of commissions they're paid from advertisers. If the user directly purchase from that merchant immediately, or within the period specified by the merchant's affiliate program rules -- the affiliate then receives his commission on the user's purchase.
