The vessels we live in, ie carbon, bacteria, bone, blood, flesh, urine, excrement all returns to the Earth. Our D.N.A. remains on our bodies in case we fall into an Irish swamp and gets preserved. The really interesting part is our spirit, which leaves our bodily vessel and waits to find a new one. Ghosts are waiting to find a new vessel. When a baby is born in the future its bodily vessel will inherit its parents D.N.A. and the spirit of someone who has died. Dejavu is memories from your spirit in a past vessel. Your body will return to nature and your spirit will find another vessel. Everything continues. Do not be afraid. Pack toothbrush and toothpaste in case they dont have any. @Daniel Owens is extremely cool guy and grade A+++++ domain name trader.

Nothing man makes last more than a few centuries except for plastic.

Ah......but what we are made of will last longer than the universe has already been around for.....

Unless there is no afterlife, or we have no recollection of previous existences.....

IMO, both would mean the same thing. In both cases, your old self is permanently erased.

If you are looking for a rational and mundane answer;
The moment a living thing dies, the system shuts itself down forever and disappears from this realm completely. Molecules turn into different molecules.

If you are on a spiritual quest;
You should read "Bardo Thodol" (The Tibetan Book of the Dead)

The danger of believing in the afterlife is that it can cause some suffering souls to escape this life through unnatural means.
If there is no afterlife then what is the danger in believing in the afterlife?

If someone is suffering in this life and they kill themselves then there is no more suffering, if there is no afterlife, because there is nothing (for them after death). In this scenario acting on a belief that there is an afterlife would end suffering. Not that I am advocating making such a decision. I dont believe in an afterlife because I dont think the spirit ever dies, just the current vessel. I also think we learn from our experiences and our spirits become intrinsically smarter with each new vessel existence.

Inevitably we all will find out eventually.

Unless there is no afterlife, or we have no recollection of previous existences.....
