What format for logo design?? Help please

Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I hope i can get some help.
I was asked to design a logo for a corporate company. I did do up a contract and stated the type of format for the image that i would give to them. This is my first time at logo's
I am wondering if there is any rules regarding the type of formats a logo should be sold in. Also when one designs a logo do you have to turn over the layers and steps you took to achieve the logo. Any help in this i would really appreciate.

It's quite common (especially in professional design) to deliver logo's in Vector-based file formats - but you have to design the logo's in programs like Adobe Illustrator, not in Photoshop.

Why would you not design it in photoshop? I thought the common formats are png ,jpeg, eps and gif, all which can be done in photoshop. I was asked as a favor, this is really out of my area of knowledge the only program i have is photoshop. Would the company just get the final image or all the steps that it took to get to the final image?

You can design a logo in paint.. personally, photoshop is the best, and .png provides extremely high quality.

this is what I thought about .png, it is also transparent right?

what about rights to the steps to produce the logo, the layers and the artists techinques? Does the company just receive the final image or all of the steps it took to get to that point?

it all depends on the client, and yes you can use any imaging software to make logos, but AI is one of the best. I use photoshop 7 and get along just fine. also vector means shape so if you make a shape in PS or AI it's still a vector drawing.

You can design them in Photoshop, actually is quite common - I do this myself, too. But for professional logo's it's more common to use vector based logo's. But this depends on your client's requirements ofcourse.

I don't see a problem in using Photoshop? You can send them the .psd file and the .png (which is the preferred image format these days). So if they're happy with the logo they can use the .png immediately.

well if they have photoshop all you should have to send them is the psd, and they can export it to whatever they want....to me the best file format is png, its not a big file and the quality is awesome
