Need some advice please. I am wondering what a website such as domainpromocodes.com likely makes per month and how do they do it. Also curious as to what domain reseller sites usually make per month.

I run a competing site to domainpromocodes/retailmenot.com/etc so I can try to help out a little here.

It is a very tough, saturated market. The commission or markup on a domain name is very small, around 40 cents per domain. You are not likely to make anything as a reseller unless you have a very popular site. Hosting commission is higher, but once again it is a very tough and saturated market. Everyone and their mom has a reseller account and wants to start a hosting company.

As for the HOW: It's the same as any affiliate marketing. You sign up for affiliate programs, publish your unique link, and get people to click it. It's a lot of work keeping up with coupons, a lot of work building up traffic, and lots of people simply copy your coupon code and don't use your link... meaning you don't get commission. If you fall behind on adding coupons, people will go elsewhere. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are very busy times for me and I'll be working around the clock those days, but typically I spend about an hour a day updating coupons and stuff.

If it's a market you'd like to get into, I might possibly have 2 domains for sale with matching logos already created. AllHostingCoupons and AllDomainCoupons dot com. Great domains, but they won't be cheap. The script I use is largely custom and I'm not willing to discuss specifics about it, but CouponPress is a decent script to use.

People making money on websites are not likely to tell their competition or potential competition how to compete with them. I debated about even replying to this but I happen to be feeling generous today with the holidays :)

It can make from 0$ up to 1000 - 2000$. Depends on how much you invest in marketing the site. Also getting on first page for the niche you are talking about ... not that easy.
Generally speaking: with a coupon site ( all kind of sites ) the maximum proven that I know about is 4500$/month. This refers to normal sites made by usual people.

Unless you are willing to put a LOT of time and effort in to it, and understand it could take a year before you make $100 in a month, then I wouldn't waste time starting.

As others mention it is a very busy market. Most reseller sites don't put the effort in to make their site look unique and nice (the default sites are horrible!), and they simply will not make money - why would anyone buy from you if your site is horrible to use.

I would always suggest planning carefully. I often look in to setting up a reseller site, but you won't get rich, you will not become a big name unless you can offer unparalleled support to your clients, something I can't do as one man.

Just think about what you can do that would make people buy from you rather than a proper registrar, if you can't think of anything, then it will be a long slow journey to make it worth while.

How they make money is, they write an E-BOOK like some PDF or Word file (sometimes they burn a 250 KILOBYTE doc on a 7.5 Gigabyte Blu-Ray disc), then sell it to people with some title like "How To Make Money With Coupon Sites in 5 Days" for $39.95.

I have been in this industry and you can do quite well.

Just remember
1) Build a better mouse trap
2) Have kick ass marketing "its tough competition out there"
3) You better have a good size bank account to get this going
4) Plan ahead on how you will make money, even from people who don't click any links and im not talking about CPM banner ads. That won't pay much at all.

If this is something you have a passion for you can make it work.

Good luck!
