check out prweb.com. I personally don't bother with press release. It's kinda like a news article for the industry you want to target.

I would not waste my time directories or link exchanges... The best way to get links is to create content worth linking to and promote that content.

Link Baiting is the BEST and outranks everything.
Second would be social media.

And I second the RSS directory suggestion too. Recently seen nice results from a little bit of this.

I paid a firm for a PR campaign recently. They wrote a pro sounding Press Release and distributed that around a bunch of PR aggregators. Then they used the text as a script for an audio podcast, which went out to a lot of podcasting directory sites that give great backlinks. They also have a private network of about 200 blogs it gets published across and submit my RSS feed to a bunch of directories. That package was $100.

It's a great way to kick off a new site with lots of good quality and varied backlinks.. and cheap I think.

Not sure just writing a press release and submitting it to prweb has a lot of effect by itself. But if you tried to follow a similar sort of 'campaign' of marketing each release, I think you can get worthwhile results from PR marketing, even doing it yourself.

This is something you need to leave for the professional marketer. The important thing is their hard to submit. And not all placement sites have the same rules.
