I've seen different people saying .ws stood for different things, is it Western Samoa or Web Site?

To my knowledge it stands for Western Samoa, but it's commonly thought of as meaing website by a lot of people.

Awww, "I" wanted to say that! ;)

.ws, incidentally, is growing on me.. not in a fungi-get-it-off-me way, but in a good way ;)

I may actually reg another one day!

It's marketed as "WebSite" :!:

It is actually the country-code for Samoa ... read more (hype) of the story here, IMHO. http://www.website.ws/about.dhtml

I think that is what I heard intially myself.. and the Average Joe's probably still do.. but that shows how good the original marketing push was.. and that's why .ws is "growing" on me.. potential.

Remember, too, ".TV" is the teeny isle of "Tuvalu" (could sink at any moment, IMHO).
Same concept ... though Verisign owns the ".TV" (as well as the ".CC").

Just some extra info.

Does it really matter that .ws was originally the extension for Western Samoa, and .tv for Tuvalu??

I personally don't think so, and as long as the average surfing Joe thinks it means TV or WebSite then I don't see a problem at all that they are "hyped" to mean just that.. :)

I'm actually starting to see some type-ins on a daily basis on some of my .ws av .tv domains as well now by the way.. :D

Well it matters to these tiny island countries!, they have both received a fortune for the use of there extensions.

.ws was promoted as 'website' as dgridley said. And it wasnt just hinted at - it was almost like the Registrars thought it did[/b] mean website.

"Get your .website address now!"

I didnt even know it was a ccTLD until I arrived here at NamePros.

I can't believe there are still so meny people who don't know that .ws stands for Western Samoa and .tv stands for Tuvalu.
That is BASIS.
And there is NO any value in these domains.
And you WILL NOT find any notable or serious business or project under these domains.
But some people invest some money in these domains and now try to convince others that it is good investment.
Well, it is NOT.

If people think they are valuable then they are valuable. Value is only what someone is willing to pay for it.

Okay, glad I know now. I thought it was Western Samoa too because it was when I did typed in google.ws, like a year ago, it said that. But then I saw it as website so I wasn't sure. Thanks everyone.

Seeing as I know a few folks who make about half their living reselling .ws domains, I'd have to disagree with you. There's value in anything that can be sold. Even at wholesale prices (damn you wholesale prices!!) a 100% return on an investment is nothiong to laugh at. If you don't believe that, look around at the .ws you see that get sold... ALWAYS a profit, yes? Yes.
