Hi there,

I developed a search engine with its own crawler, etc, and spent only a few hours here and there in slapping on an interface for it, mostly just for me to test out the backend (And it's currently best viewed with 800*600 - I know it looks atrocious with 1024*768!).

But it's time for me to now make a decent effort on what the user sees, and thought it might be more useful if I got some tips for this before commencing.

Was thinking of possibility of showing recent searches, top searches and perhaps related searches when a search is done. Would this be a good idea?

The text there at the moment might probably be best put on a seperate page or scrapped, but I was wondering if the first page would'nt perhaps be better with some sort of text there rather than just a search box and relatively empty page, for content's sakes.

I also wanted to be a bit wild with a design, or at least a bit unique, rather than simply follow what everybody else has done with search engines.

Please consider that we do not re-use any other search engine's results - we crawl for all of our own results - hence looking to portray our uniqueness in our design.

All critiques welcomed, and moreso tips, advice and suggestions that could help the site develop its own unique identity.

Webwobot can be found here

Thanks in advance,
Scolls

i visited your website , the idea is nice same thing i was thinking to do but software included in the project specialy for the crowler but about your website , it would be perfect if you do a unique design i know it sounds like i try to drag you to the natural face of the search engin like google and others but you can change the design to be a bit clean white back ground and some clair colors i just dont like the way it looks now , it is a nice idea but dressed bad, a lil more work on the look of the website and you are on the money , and dont think that people are tired of how search engin looks like that is why you want to change the look , because that is how the design of search engin really fits a white page a text box and a button and ready for you to find what you need in the net , all of them have the same thing , ask.com google.com yahoo.com .......etc

I would suggest getting a whole template made from someone on NamePros. It is a good idea but first you have to start with a template before you brainstorm add-ons to the site. The search is cool, but as of right now your site is attrotious.

Site review

Hi. First of all, the template is really basic. It needs more colouring and editing to do. Second, the content is well-based. Third, the forum needs a bit more colouring or editing (the template of it needs to be improved more).

Good luck with your site!

Overall Rating: 5,5/10 (Template needs improvement)

Regards. :)

Thanks for all the help so far.

If I were to get somebody here to do a template, I imagine it would cost mega-$$$ ? Or would there be some way for me to pay in kind for such a service? (If only I had money...)

Also, I would like for the site to not come across as a "Google-wannabe" or anything like that. Do you think that this might be at all possible? Or is the google-type of setup the only way a search engine can work?

I'm not sure if having forums is a good idea, and I've added them for sakes of seeing if it might somehow be used.

I am also considering integrating speech recognition into it by way of a free desktop interface, which could also double as a desktop assistant. And then also results by email, for example, if one wanted to keep up to date on what new results crop up on various searches. Would these be worthwhile additions?

My forte is actually Delphi, so the whole backend is written with Delphi as it is, using MySQL as DB.

If you are not going to use TvDomain's template have a look around http://www.openwebdesign.org/ or http://www.oswd.org there might be a few templates that might work.

I quite like TvDomain's proposed template. Does anybody have any thoughts on this proposal?

it looks ok but the left drpo shaddow just doesnt look right, it looks miss aligned in 1280x1024

does a search engine really need a form too?

and isnt it a bit strange that a search engine is using google ads?

Ah, I see, thanks. I can't get that resolution on my monitor, so never noticed it before.

If not using a form, what else should I rather use?

The google ads will eventually be changing to our own ads... I just need to code a bit faster!!! :)

Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear it did that to you... :( I have noticed that from time to time. Funny though, if you just hit refresh it then usually just instantly displays. Very strange. I'll investigate and try to find the problem this weekend.
