"Q: Why did you think Internet video was the way to go back in 2004?
A: It's the perfect distribution model. There are low financial barriers to entry. For example, when I was at Sony, it cost us about $2 million to build an editing suite. Now, with $10,000 and a high-powered laptop, people can create videos of the same quality.
Web video is exploding. The real challenge has been people trying to monetize it through advertising. We're expecting the local video advertising market to grow. The theme is to get a professionally created video and make sure it ends up in all the right places."
"Q: How is WellcomeMat funded?
A: We were self-financed and bootstrapped, and then we took a round (of investment) from friends and family. We plan to be cash-flow positive within nine months.
We get paid through larger partnerships to handle the entire back end of video on their website. We will have a free level of service and a subscription service that will start at $12.95 a month.
Q: Has the downturn in the real-estate market affected your business?
A: What we're finding now is that people are using video a lot more because they need to stand out among the rising inventory. In a down market, I can only see this trend accelerating."
