I'm just curious
Is it still standard to have layouts work on 800x600, or is 1024x768 standard bottom resolution now? Curious because my site is narrow due to it being made to function on 800x600 computers.

There are some stats somewhere that show they are about the same, but I can not find them at the moment. I always design 800x600, that way it fits all resolustinos, its better to have it small on a screen, than a virticle scroll bar :imho:

er.. did you mean horizontal scroll bar? Most pages have vertical scrollbars. This one does.

heh, nice.
Anyway, the reason I was asking was because I was wondering whether we were at the stage where the thought pattern was "Yes, there are still people using 800x600, but nobody cares about them anymore"

I would say 800x600 is the most popular resolution, with 1024x768 close behind.

Ah, alright. So it still is important to have websites display on 800x600. Good to know, thanks guys.

Some designers DO think like that, in the same way they ignore people on dial-up. :|

It's a big mistake in my opinion. I've even heard folks say things like...

"If they can't afford high speed they can't afford my services, so I don't care how long my page takes to load for them."

They fail to realize that it's not an issue of cost, and much of the world has no access to high speed connections. I feel you should try to design for the largest audience possible, and that includes dial-up users and people who run lower resolutions like 800 x 600. Not everyone has high speed, and not everyone has a 21 inch monitor running 1600 x 1200.

Yeah. Just to be clear, my point wasn't that we should ignore those people, especially that great percentage of the population.

I was just curious if we had moved past the point where it was necessary. On VERY few computers, people will still be running in 640 x 480, but it seems generally acceptable to design site layouts that won't work particularly well on that resolution.

Oh, yes I know. :)

phleet, you must forgive me. I'm one of those people with no high speed access in my neighborhood yet, so I've become angry and bitter, making sure to express my frustration whenever the topic comes up. :guilty: :red:

I design for 1024x768 but I'll try a little bit to make it look ok on 800x600.
But anyway it's hard to fit anything on a 800x600 layout.

Why is it hard to design for 800x600?
My resolution is 1152x864, and I still design for 800x600.

haha, of course
in any case, I was simply looking for information.

Also, I certainly agree that it isn't difficult to fit things on 800x600.
If you must have it bigger than that, simply use divs working on percentages.

A 468x60 ad takes up over half the page

 Ya, how much ad space I can fit on my design is always at top of my list.
But you are making the assumption that if its designed in 800x600, that it will always be too small for larger rez. Wich, is not the case, you can always do as phleet said. ;)

Each to his own though, I will step away from this before it starts to get messy
