There are a Gazillion Classified Ads Scripts. I'd like something which can drill down by state and town/city. But I don't particularly like a Craigslist clone. Has anyone got any recommendations. Prefer free but will buy if necessary.

I have been doing some research on this looking for something for a niche vintage site. As to free, they seem to be very limited, bad, totally non-commercial, and/or available only to non-profits. I have listed the ones that I have found below with the first couple looking to be the likely best. Both are in the $50-60 range although if you are co-buying hosting, you can save half on the wpClassiPress script. As you might guess, that is a Word Press based system. The xZeroScripts one is a PHP Craig's List clone that, to be fair, looks better than Craig's List but, then again, what doesn't (except for Craig's List being a catagory killer, of course!). There are several unlicensed, illicit sellers of the xZeroScript script that are not legal and which may be subject to revokation and no support later. They are cheaper, of course since they didn't do the work. ScriptsFeed.com is a very inexpensive system that has only one problem. The entire theme is predetermined as to physical look. If you are code saavy, it seems to be open source. Possibly interesting if a very cookie cutter genic site is OK or if you want to put in sweat equity, maybe. It is $17.95.

Here is the list:

Probably the best:

XZero Community Classifieds: Start your own community classifieds site similar to Craigslist/BackPage/Loquo/Kijiji/GumTree today swith our powerful, feature rich, easy to use, turn key classifieds script! - XZero Scripts: PHP+MySQL Scripts. Yes! You'(sample site: Nifty350.com)

WordPress Classified Theme | ClassiPress (sample site: GreenSheet.us Classifieds - Post & Search Free Ads, Share to Facebook, Read in Print)

Other Interesting ones:

BosDev - powerful web applications for the professional web master

DMXReady.com | Catalog | DMXReady Classifieds Listings Manager 1.2

KCScripts.com website software

Classifieds Ads - BrotherScripts.com

Scriptsfeed.com - The Best Source of php scripts for webmasters - (cheap but not versatile)

More Expensive but not absurd:

Cubrosoft - Live Demo

Classifieds script

Noah's Classified Ads Directory CMS and Blog Software - The leading SEO E-Commerce Classified Ads Software on the web

SmartISoft - PHP/mySQL Scripts Development - Smart Internet Software

FuzzyMonkey.net - Best Quality Web Hosting, Linux Webhosting Provider, Free Software

AB Scripts - Quality Software for Your Web - PHP scripts, AB Links Directory, Gold Classifieds, AB Ad Management, AB Banner Exchange

Rapid Classified: ASP Online Classified Software Scripts

Expensive or Specialty Markets:

Classified Ads Software Script - Mojo Classifieds

Smart Photo ADs - Example sites

Real Estate Portal | Software PHP MySQL classifieds buy sell houses apartments

Iki Classifieds - Turn Key Classifieds Solution

http://www.oxyclassifieds.com/demo.html

Almond Classifeds

Classified Ads ABS-5.06

Now, I have to decide what to do. I am with you on the Craig's List look but, then again, it works. The Word Press one may have some limitations brought on by its base structure but it doesn't look at all like Craig's List and the do have a significantly updated version 'coming soon'. The xZero Craig's List clone has excellent support for geo ad locations.

A drop dead excellent specialty classifieds site is Mid-Century Modern Furniture at Lushpad. Too bad that it is proprietary and not an available script to the best of my knowledge. BTW - I benefit none from these links, to be clear!

Hi Jon. Thank you for a comprehensive list of Classified Ads Softwares. More helpful than Hostscripts and much better than I ever expected. I think I agree with you xZero's, although a craigslist clone, looks at least more tidy than Craigslist, and looks very good. Although I personally would have liked a bit more color and picture emphasis. I actually have 2 different sites in mind. But I think I'll definitely go with xZero for the larger US site, although it's more a specific requirement than General Classifieds, and maybe try one of the others at around the same price point, without the strong need for area classification, for the more local General Classifieds Ads, but slightly greater emphasis on pictures.

Thank you very much. Rep added.

Let me also recommend iLister classified ads script by WorksForWeb. iLister is pretty good for the local area classifieds. Very easy-to-use and quite comprehensive if you want to go beyond the default functionality.

From the research I've done so far, I'd say....

The best paid program is Geo Classifieds Enterprise Edition - (Classified Software Only). They offer solutions from $199 up to $799.

The best free program is Install NoahsClassifieds | SimpleScripts. You need to login to Simple Scripts for free in order to install the program on your website.

There is very little you can change in the free version of Noah Classifieds. What you see is what you get. Basically, it's quite crippled. And I think for $199 to register, I'd chose GeoDesic by a long way, even if it doesn't have all the features I'd like in the basic version.

Most all of the free classified ads scripts are complete crap.

Some color and a list of feature classifieds down the side like iLister has in their version 2 template.

httpcodes.com looks great but it doesn't look like you can change the template look much. Long term, that could be a problem plus it may actually be a bit too colorful. Great price though!

These look very interesting too.

The numerous choices are frightening! Anyone actually using any of them? Your input would be fantastic!

OK. My vote is in.

I think all the free software is crap.

I think Classified Ads Script has possibilities, but needs a lot of work done on it's front page. But it's cheap at $39 for unlimited domains.

I think CubroSoft Live Demo is the best cheap classified ads system. OK, it may not be the prettiest, but it provides a great list of features for the price of $69.

In the $200 range i'd give honorable mention to http://www.ajclassifieds.net.

In the $350 range i'd give honorable mention to PHP Classifieds | DeltaScripts.

But in my opinion, the best classified ads software is Geodesic Solutions - Classifieds Ad Software and Auction Software. For $199 you get a great system with some restrictions, see here Classifieds & Auction Software Comparison. I don't think you get much more for your $399, but for $799 you get all the bells and whistles you could possibly want in a classified ads system. They've just released a new version, and you get great support.

These opinions are only based upon evaluating the demos and reading the features lists. I am also biased against any classified ads system that doesn't require registration to post ads.

If you want to do your own evaluation, here is a good place to start http://www.codango.com/php/dir/webapps/ecommerc/classifi/?

I think I just about have enough HTML/PHP knowledge that I could make the front page a lot nicer than it currently is. But I'm not a coder. I'm tempted by the price to see if I can make it look better.

Also see my post above. I think CubroSoft is very good for $69.

These look very interesting too.

Actually I just ordered the free trial for the $199 Geodesic Basic :) I don't expect a reply until Monday/Tuesday though. I think I like Geodesic best of all. But I'm balking a bit at the price of $199 for a slightly less powerful system. I'm kinda hoping the free trial will convince me to shell out this much money :)

Hi tommiko. Thank you for your recommendation. The script looks very good.

OK. I've run a test on this software. There is no way to monetize the classified ads. They're all free. Also, the top level Categories are limited to the 7 listed. You can change their names, but if you have more than 7 you cannot add them. But if you change the names you still have the same icon which you cannot change. Also I didn't like the way the system puts everything in lower case besides the first letter. Los Angeles comes out as Los angeles, Other H&G comes out as Other h&g.

Basically, your paying $240 for a free classified ads system. You monetize it with Google Ads and we all know how great that is, right? And by Banner Ads. So, although I think it's a pretty good system, I think it's pricey for a system with no charges to the advertisers (bold, featured, etc).

Which $150 scripts are you referring to? Geodesic is only $199 - 20% = $159 until end of February.

No Geodesic for $199 is like a locked down script from 1990, it's junk if you want any features they make you buy every single module for $50-$150. By the time you're done adding module that make it a reasonable functional script you're at nearly 1k, when scripts for $150 do all the same stuff or better

Geodesic is junk and a rip off
