I wouldn't say it petered out. There are TV commercials, there's ads in some places and tons of affiliate programs for VOIP. I think what scares people is the fact that the internet has something to do with your phone line. It's probably like cell phones, it took a while for cell phones to catch on (of course cell phones were very expensive at one point in time). VOIP is big business and is growing fast, you just aren't noticing it, because it's still a niche.

It's not going anywhere. It's new and consider it like computers eventually everybody will have to have it. The landbased phone companies in the US as we know them will likely be government subsidised in 5-10 years. It makes alot more sense to have voip over a landline. For everything I can get at the usual suspect voip companies it would cost double that at my local phone co. The cable companies have been working for years burying their lines underground and working around the charges they would pay to the phone companies for the poles and maintenance.

The only problem with getting into voip I foresee is when the cable companies themselves start pushing it as an addon service.

That day is already here. Where I live Comcast (the local cable company) offers VOIP services. For $100 per month you can get basic cable, internet and VOIP services. It's a great price for those that use their internet services and are interested in their VOIP, but I love my DSL. I'm still gathering up the courage to go with VOIP and lose my DSL email address (I'm going to get a DSL line with no regular phone service, but they will take away my ISP email address when I do that).

VOIP is the future, at least until it's highly taxed and regulated.
