I am looking into the idea of starting a small youtube clone, for 1 category of videos.

I have seen tons of youtube clone sites pop up and I wanted to know what everyones take on developing one. Would a 10Mbit unmetered line be able to support a smallish site?

Has anyone else looked into doing stuff like this that has any advice?

I have not looked into doing this stuff, but obviously you are going to need a dedicated server. Many web hosts decline that type of sites (massive traffic and bandwidth use websites) So you are going to find a host carefully, which would cause in a raised investment cost.

Development
Basically, a php application to manage the site. Whether you are a web developer or you are going to hire a web developer to this for you.
This is a big project, and I wish you good luck with it.

I was actually not planing on having a script at all but to just have a high BW server with flv files on it.

Then use a normalish page with the videos as objects/includes. Users would not be able to upload videos we would just host lots of them. I am trying to figure out the bandwidth requirements of it all.

It doesn't look like I could find a server for the project, doing the math.. with serverbeach.com servers 2000gb per month would make only 10,000 views of a 175mb file. Maybe i wont bother, no wonder youtube pays 1M a month in bandwidth.

why do you just not embed the videos into a normal html page?
