Great stuff, here are the details:

=============================

Cool apps that surprise and delight mobile users, built by developers like you, will be a huge part of the Android vision. To support you in your efforts, Google has launched the Android Developer Challenge, which will provide $10 million in awards -- no strings attached -- for great mobile apps built on the Android platform.
How It Works

The award money will be distributed equally between two Android Developer Challenges:

* Android Developer Challenge I: We will accept submissions from January 2 through March 3, 2008
* Android Developer Challenge II: This part will launch after the first handsets built on the platform become available in the second half of 2008

In the Android Developer Challenge I, the 50 most promising entries received by March 3 will each receive a $25,000 award to fund further development. Those selected will then be eligible for even greater recognition via ten $275,000 awards and ten $100,000 awards.
Build Your Favorite Mobile Application

We welcome all types of applications but are looking to reward innovative, useful apps that make use of Android's capabilities to deliver a better mobile experience. Here are some suggested areas of focus to get you started:

* Social networking
* Media consumption, management, editing, or sharing, e.g., photos
* Productivity and collaboration such as email, IM, calendar, etc.
* Gaming
* News and information
* Rethinking of traditional user interfaces
* Use of mash-up functionality
* Use of location-based services
* Humanitarian benefits
* Applications in service of global economic development
* Whatever you're excited about!

Steve said "there is NO Gphone" but the Android platform will allow you to create thousands of Gphones. Go figure.

That's right, there is no gPhone - for now.

The open-source platform they are backing (called Android after the start-up that originally developed it) will enable any serious hardware manufacturer to produce an Android phone - and the software licencing fees that Google/OHA charge will be $0.

But as far as I know Google have not ruled out explicitly producing their own Android phone at some later stage.

They may well use that as an unspoken threat in case carriers don't play nice, although perhaps hoping never to have to actually do it.
:imho:

The thing is though that the demo showed internet browsing via the full website experience ie zooming out, cached pages, images etc.

It's slightly bothered me since I purchased my mobi's that 1) mobile browsers are getting much more sophisticated and 2) data allowances are getting much cheaper.. well in the Uk anyway. I pay £25 a month for unlimited web access ( T-mobile web n walk ). My phone will even connect to my home wifi network.. so no data charges at all if I'm at home doing some quick surfing/email checking.

For the last year either by gprs or wifi I've been able to browse large sites freely, bid on ebay, pay securely via paypal, listen to podcasts, stream files direct to phone (orb.com), download files from my pc, instantly upload pics to flikr etc etc. I have a nokia N80 which I bought 2nd hand from Ebay for around £80. It only has a little screen but I can browse pretty well on it using Opera mini + the bundled browser and even that has a pc-like cursor and rotating 'last pages viewed' facility. They are all shown as full web pages.

Sadly imho I don't think Android will do mobi's any favours. And if mobile browsers, wifi access and data contracts are all vying and endeavoring to provide (as the demo showed) a 'fuller' web browsing experience which includes full websites, Google Maps and a Vista-like touch screen page caching system...then with the current restrictions .mobi doesn't stand a chance. If and when the restrictions are lifted then mobis will be competing against established mainstream sites with nothing to distingush it from any other tld. In a nutshell seems like efforts are being concentrated on bringing bigger and better net experiences to the phone NOT paring things down to the (.mobi) minimum.

Im not a basher, I own around 15 mobi's. I just find it hard to see where .mobi fits in when you can have things like 360 degree map scrolling and streaming youtube videos on phones ? This was posted from my mobile.
