Update: Finally got it after more than a month...

I sent a fax two days ago to VeriSign to apply for .com / .info zone file access. Do you know how long should I wait for the reply? Do they routinely approve all applications, or are they picky about them? I am eager to get the zone file access, but two days passed and I haven't received my access password yet... and the same for Afilias .info zone access...

It could take a few days, but if you don't receive a reply send an E-mail to [email protected] to follow up.
I don't know if they are picky now because I have applied a long time ago.
They require a static IP too but I have noticed that I can still log in to their FTP using a different IP address ^^

Anything in particular you're interested in finding out from the zone file? I may be able to help out depending on what you're after.

That stands for anyone here actually, let me know what you would find useful from the zone file and I'll see what I can do.

I simply need a list of all .com domains. I want to recreate a list of existing .pl domains, by looking at .com domains and checking if corresponding .pl is also registered.

It takes 7-10 days from the date you applied. They will send you directions via Fax. After you get access the .com file alone takes several hours to download.

Hope this helps.

OK, so I see that I need to wait a bit more. Is the file zipped for faster download?

Yes the file is zipped, but it still takes several hours to download. It has every single .com domain name that is registered, so there are millions.

The size of the zone files today:
com.zone.gz 984.28 Mb
net.zone.gz 141.71 Mb

They can be slow

On January 10, I filed zone file access requests for the .com/.net, .org, and .info zone files. Afilias responded for .info two days later, and got me access on Jan 16. PIR responded for .ORG on Jan 24, and got me access on Jan 29. I haven't heard about .COM/.NET yet. If I don't have it within 2-3 more weeks, I'll follow up with them. If you follow up sooner, and it actually helps, please post what you did.

I sent a follow up to Verisign about a week ago, but still haven't heard form them. I don't know what to do :(

What, exactly, are these files? Are they nessicary to run a registrar, or are they just available because Verisign felt like releasing them?

Went back and it took 8 business days (12 days total) for me to get verisign access. Two days ago? Not time to worry/pester them yet. If nothing after a week+, then you get to go into "politely-pester" mode ;)

Woohoo! It's been a month, and I finally got the Verisign fax! Took long but was worth it. Never heard from Afilias, though.

Congrats :tu:

Now it will probably take you as long to read their writing so you can actually use your newly issued password ;)

Nah, wasn't that hard... The fax wasn't easily readable but I figured out the FTP server and password easily. I logged in and swa what's there, right now I don't feel like downloading the 1 GB file :) But I will soon...
