With Internet traffic doubling every 12 to 18 months, VeriSign Inc. said Wednesday that it is beefing-up its Web infrastructure services by installing additional servers over the next two years in growth areas such as Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Africa, Middle East, India and Eastern and Central Europe.

That'll help the company keep up with what it said are more than 14.5 billion queries each day as part of its Internet registry service under which it sells .net and .com Internet domain names. Verisign currently operates 18 geographically-dispersed Web servers at strategic locations around the world.

"Over the last 18 months, VeriSign has analyzed Internet traffic data, paired it with advanced mapping technologies and pinpointed new regions of emerging growth so that we can enhance Internet performance in all corners of the globe," said Mark McLaughlin, senior vice president of VeriSign Naming and Directory Services, in a statement.

VeriSign said of the some 900 million Internet users worldwide, 242 million are located in North America. Between 65 and 75 percent of all Web content is in English, VeriSign said, observing that just 35 percent of surfers are English-speaking.
