I'll have a go giving my answer to that, but I'm sure Equity will too....
I'm not sure the average domainers are focusing on the .tv extension. Perhaps they are more so because of this sub forum now than before, but overall I think think the view of ourselves (the people in the big thread above) are not shared amongst the greater domaining community.... yet.
As with anything, a lot of the time it pays to specualate on something when it isn't in fashion... when its not cool. More so if you can find something that isn't cool, yet has the great potential to be very cool in the future and further to this - has very good reasons that it probably will be.
The domainers as a group havent focused on .tv because its current and historical sales data is lacking (not many have been sold in public to raise awareness)... and there are so many words left available to register - I think a lot of people like to find a needle in a haystack - a short word .com for instance... there are thousands of short one word .tvs left thus they don't give it value. That is a mistake.
I'm fairly new to domain investing so I can't say that this interest is sudden or not. I doubt it is though, I think you stumbled across a new forum and taken it as evidence it is.. The shrewd investors have bought .tvs for a long time I think and they know how to use them and why they bought them.
Put simply, the future of the internet will see websites also become synonymous with the television lifestyle. Media center PCs are becoming more common everywhere, many people are putting them in their lounges next to their current tv sets and using them to control their entire music collection and play dvds etc not to mention, surf the net. It won't be long (sooner than you think) that tv stations will be broadcasting all of their shows over the net.. not only this but you will have access to any previous show on any channel at any time, as long as you are connected to the net to get it... you will of course watch these on your tv. It's not hard to now see that tv and the net could conceivably become an interchangeable term to some people, with time spent on .tv websites sky rocketing.
Lets not forget that tv used to be the old resource for all your information before the net, it had everything on there - the news, programs, advertising.....what you now get on the net. You will soon be getting all you have on the net, on your tv.
That's of course my opinion.. but I don't think I've made too big a leap on most of that. Keep watching for tech news about stations doing net broadcasting... watch tv now for adverts of .tv websites - I've already seen many. Infact I fllicked through my entire digital box channels last night and came across a whole raft of channels working in unison with their .tv site.
Apologies for typos, I typed quickly.
