Using the Domain Research Suite (DRS) Monitoring Tools in Domain Name Investing

The Domain Research Suite (DRS) is a collection of web-based tools that let users research and monitor domain names. DRS comprises two sets of solutions—search and monitoring tools. DRS’s search tools have been tackled in a separate thread already, so this post focuses on the DRS monitoring tools, and how they can help domain name investors.

How to Access the Domain Research Suite (DRS) Monitoring Tools
To start using the DRS monitoring solutions, follow these steps:

1. Visit the DRS homepage.
2. If you are an existing account owner, click “Open Dashboard.” Otherwise, you will see “Open Demo.”
3. If you don’t have an account yet, click “Sign Up” to access the DRS monitoring tools.

4. The monitoring solutions are on the lower section of the left pane. Select the tool you want to use. Each DRS monitoring tool is discussed in greater detail in the succeeding paragraphs.

Domain Monitor: Receive Alerts When a Domain Name’s Status Changes
Domain Monitor allows users to keep track of changes in the WHOIS records of specific domain names. You can track registered domain names and receive alerts when their registration expires, they get re-registered, or are any other changes.

You can track one or multiple domains by uploading them in a single comma-separated values (CSV) file.

Every time domain names are added to the DRS Domain Monitor, they get listed on the right pane, along with the dates when they were last monitored and when changes to them were last detected.

To see the changes detected regarding the monitored domain, click “View Changes” in the last column on the right. For the domain apple[.]com, DRS’s Domain Monitor would have alerted the user that on 21 October, the street address for the registrant, administrative, and technical contacts were changed to One Apple Park Way.

Registrant Monitor: Detect the Domain Registration Activities of a Person or an Entity
Registrant Monitor allows domain name investors to monitor the activities of their competitors and market leaders. You can use the person’s name, organization, email address, phone or fax number, street address, and other search terms (i.e., any data point in the registrant’s WHOIS record). The monitored registrant term would then appear on the list, as shown in the screenshot below.

Adding Subjects to Registrant Monitor
Users can add more terms to monitor and words to exclude to narrow down the results. Say you want to get alerted to domain registrations under the name “Eric Perry.” But you only wish to see the domains where the registrant email address is ericperry@protonmail[.]com but not ericperry@gmail[.]com.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click the “Edit monitor” link located in the fifth column on the right pane.
2. Then click the plus sign beside “Add term” to add a monitoring text string.
3. Toggle the “Include/Exclude” button to specify that ericperry@protonmail[.]com should be included, while ericperry@gmail[.]com should be excluded.

Viewing the Changes
To view the domains that the registrant made changes to, click the “View Changes” link in the fourth column. The Eric Perry monitoring revealed that on 31 October and 2 November, the registrant added or modified xandritemedia[.]com and highlineproserv[.]com, respectively.

If the registrant drops a domain name, it will also be reflected in the tracker.

Brand Monitor: Keep Track of Domain Registrations That Use Branded and Other Search Terms
Brand Monitor lets you track domain names that contain keywords related to a brand, company, product, or trademarked term. It can help domain investors follow keyword trends based on how many new domain names containing certain terms were registered.

You can do a basic search that lets you enter up to four keywords, separated by a comma. DRS’s Brand Monitor also allows you to perform an advanced search where you can:
  • Include or exclude search terms by specifying up to four strings to include and another four to exclude
  • Include automatically generated misspellings of the keyword by toggling the “Typos” button on the right to on

After adding the search terms to monitor, they will appear in the table. Said table also lets you see how many misspelled variations were included, if any. You will also see the terms excluded, the date when the tracker was added to Brand Monitor, and the date when changes to the monitoring sheet were last seen.

Making Changes to Brand Monitor Trackers
Each tracker can be edited by clicking the “Edit monitor” link in the last column. From there, you can add search terms, include or exclude typos, and make other advanced search modifications.

Viewing the Changes Detected
Click the “View changes” link in the fourth column below the date when the last changes were detected. When monitoring the term “presstv” and 163 of its misspellings, for instance, Brand Monitor saw several changes starting on 21 October 2020 until the current date (4 November).

As seen in the screenshot below, on 4 November, DRS’s Brand Monitor detected 36 newly registered or recently modified domains that contain the word “presstv.” Eight domains also expired on the same day.

Success in domain name investing can sometimes be attributed to timing, which Domain Research Suite (DRS) monitoring tools can help with. The domain names you have been eyeing could become available any minute, and unless you automate monitoring with Domain Monitor, other investors might overtake you. Brand Monitor and Registrant Monitor also allow you to keep track of trends so you can take action on time.
